1.3 HK Engine Mods

Featured Replies

Hi, Looking for some advice; have a 1300 HK engine in an early mk2 golf, car is straight out of the box so am trying to keep original(ish) bit of an OEM+ project. Have engine out at the moment, have resisted temptation to drop a bigger unit in an have instead set myself the target of getting 100bhp+ out of the HK unit and for it still to be drivable...

So the best knowledge of these engines is obviously on this forum; looking for some suggestions, using where ever poss OEM parts, I have already managed to find a VW Motorsport inlet manifold so twin 40s (or 45s?) are defiantly on the cards.

Not sure best approach for bottom end?, head? cam? blower :)?

Thanks

Rich

Schrick have relaunched the classic mechy camshafts so 296 or higher + big valves (eg from KWL or Feld) might get you to 100bhp.

45s are too big.

32mm venturis in twin40s is probably max to be useful driveable than plain race car.

Twin40s of course not OEM, so big weber twin choke would keep the look. I tried with one from a Lancia, but reckon larger exhaust valves needed.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the schrick stuff....what would you recommend for the bottom end?

R

I wouldn't change the bottom end personally, they're high-ish compression as they are. Good, tough, revvy engines and a lot of fun even in standard form. The downside is they lack torque, which the limitation you'll be feeling in a heavy car like a mk2 Golf. Get it serviced up well, maybe think about breakerless ignition, then work on the fuelling system.

Thanks, do you know if anyone who has tinkered with one of these engines? Could I use some GT / G40 parts? Have looked for old threads but not managed find anything so far.

R

Depends what you want to use off a GT/G40. The head is totally different as it uses mechanical lifters not hydraulic. I'd personally suggest going to hydraulic lifters would be a step back. The later engines were a lot smoother, but a lot less interesting. From what I've read, the Cup (motorsport) cars stayed with mechanical lifters.

How much money do you want to spend?

90 hp should be possible with twin 40's, proper 4-branch ( no eBay special/ TA), 292 cam and some head work. The last 10 is bit more expensive. New pistons GK or Mahles), larger valves, 296 cam, balanced bottom end and so on.....

Good question; I guess I want to get best bang for my buck but at the same time the car is a keeper sons don't mind spending a few quid on it...

Would the bottom end mods help give more torque?

Do sorg still do Pistons / upgrade kits?

Thanks

R

Sorg is not around any longer. You might try kwl motorsport, wl motorsport, feld-motorsport or youngtimer76, or others.

Thanks for the info

If money gets too much you can fit 36.2mm exhaust valves from a Ford Pinto/Transit as inlet valves with new cut seats and just a small reaming adjustment to the valve guides, but preferably some porting work in the throats while head is off. The rocker arms easily adjust for the tiny stem length difference.

Do you want low down torque (carrying 4 grown-ups in a Mk2 Golf) or wide open throttle beyond the national speed limit power?

Balanced crank and lightened flywheel will give a bit more torque, but the usual trick is a smaller carb at the expense of top-end grunt, so the cam would need to be smaller

overlap such as the VAG 292 used in several engines (052109101H from memory) or high lift like a Schrick 280 .

Dave Andrews jetting program reckons 26mm chokes in Weber or Dellorto are right for 1.3 litre, but most examples use around 30mm chokes.

Slightly off topic but if you need any spares i have quite a lot for this engine.

E.g if you want a flywheel to get lightened so you dont have the car off the road.

I gather that the HK head was a favoured one for cam and valve upgrades, preferable to the GT hydraulic head.
