Hi guys,

I've recently joined this forum and thought I'd start doing a build thread of what I've already done and planning/thinking of doing in the future!

I'm just your average joe who has a passion for cars and the work that goes into them to make them your own which is one of the main reasons I have started to modify my own car. I mean why should you or I have a car that's the same as everyone else's?!

About the car: As stated in the title I own a Polo 6n2 (Polly). it's a 1.4 SE 5 door model with the standard features such as, front fogs, sunroof and electric windows and mirrors. I also think the mirrors are heated too but not 100% on that.

I had my heart set on a 6n2 ever since I was learning to drive and waited ages to get my first car. Ideally I wanted a GTI and a 3 door rather than 5 but insurance quotes was killing me on a GTI so had to settle for a 1.4. Plus my mum has back problems so in the end I opted for a 5 door in case she ever needed to get in the back :)

So I bought this car as my first car back in September with the only modifications being coilovers, fly eyed rear lights, a pioneer head unit and a crappy sub. Bought the car on the basis that it had all the main mechanicals looked at and rectified and with low miles was a decent price. It had the clutch, altenator cambelt all the usuals done and came with 12 months MOT. However in my opinion the things that let the car down was a faulty drivers window switch and the body work but it is 16 years old so can't expect anything to be in show room condition!

So enough of that time to upload some pictures and more descriptions of what I have done since owning her!

This was when I bought it and the fly eye rubbish came straight off as it wasn't my kind of thing! I then had to raise it due to insurance and more obvious than that winter was coming up and didn't want to drive about in a snow plough haha.

This is kind of what it looked like after I had raised it! I know the back is slightly higher than the front but hey ho I wasn't overly fussed about it.

After discussing A LOT with a friend with my ideas for her the first thing I did was to swap out for the pioneer for my alpine head unit! Have had this for years when I rebuilt an old mini which was to be my first car when I was younger but plans changed and kept it!

Next modification after a simple thing as that was smoothing the front rub strip off - I didn't want to smooth off the whole bumper as I prefer the oem look and this is the route I was thinking of going down. Here are a few pics of the progress of how I went about it :)

The strip was only sprayed with a rattle can made in LA7W and it's not perfect but it's pretty close! In the last picture with the rub strip finally on the car you may notice that there are GTI headlights on! Whilst I was doing the rub strip I decided whilst the bumper was off to start chopping the slam panel to get the headlights to fit. They were a little yellow when I bought them but nothing major. I flattened them down with some 800, 1000 wet and dry and then polished with G3. I could do with a going over again with 2000 grit. In the same purchase I got a GTI grill too which was then fitted to the car. I ordered the red strip that new golfs have on their gril and then fitted!

A before and after with the grills I also removed the "static" sticker on the bumper when smoothing the rub strip.

A picture with the red strip on the grill I think it makes a big improvement on the grill.

I always wanted to go down the oem route with this but wanted some american style running lights. I'd thought about mk4 markers but I ended up finding a USDM kit from boltsbolts as I'm guessing you guys already know about so I ended up getting a kit and fitting it and this was the final result :)

Here's another one I took after a little drive with a friend and some food haha

No major things really happened for a little while as I was gathering ideas for interior. Wanted to try flocking so whilst I bought new door speakers and tweeters I thought I'd give it a go a long with modifying the standard tweeter pods slightly to accommodate the bigger tweeters. So here's how it all went!

The surrounds were then fibre glassed up and made perfectly smooth to then be ready for the flock! I bought the kit off ebay as I wanted to do as much as I could myself and I always like to have a go at things before giving up and handing it over to someone else haha.

Then the A pillar and the tweeters finally in the car! I didn't end up doing the rest as I got kinda lazy and this is my daily so didn't want to strip it all off just yet plus I wasn't overly happy with how these came out.

Already had decided what kind of seats I wanted to have in the car way before I'd bought it as a friend of mine had a mk5 golf gti with leathers and as soon as I sat in them they felt so comfortable and hugging so I decided that I'd wanted a full set. I didn't want leathers though as I always preferred the cloth with the tartan in the centre. So after months of searching I found a perfect set. Only downside was that I had to remove them and travel best part of 180 miles one way to go and get them!

I took the rear seats out to see how they'd fit and look so here's a pic of them just resting up in the back :)

Great work man! Class interior too. Purple flocking is a brave choice!! Gti spoiler next perhaps??

I was thinking about fitting the GTI lights. Did you plan to fit any washers with them or the auto levelling sensors?

Cheers dude! Purple is my fave colour! I knew something would end up purple hahah! I did end up getting a GTI boot lid I'll be updating this pretty soon, just been busy with uni :(

Cheers mate! Interior to this day is still yet to be fitted haha only have the passenger seat fitted! As for the headlight washers and auto levelling I won't be adding any of that for me its far too much hassle lol

Whilst doing the interior I thought of using a genuine ipod dock with remote as I use my ipod quite a lot when driving. Turned out to be too big and I have planned to chop it up and have it fully functioning with a remote! (Still not done as I have broken my dremel hahah!)

I'd been looking for a splitter and an exhaust system for a while, stumbled across a guy in Stoke on Trent who was breaking a GTI and went to go pick this Janspeed catback system up! Is now fitted and isn't too loud, a nice burble which is what I was after!

So I got bored of the flocked items and because it wasn't professionally done as I said before the finish wasn't to the best. But I wanted to do as much as I could to the car myself so it's all trial and error I guess. Anyway I sanded all of the flocked stuff off and sourced some purple suede and decided to retrim everything! A few imperfections but overall I was over the moon with how it looks!

The lines on the headlining are just where it was rolled up stupidly I didn't roll it the other way but it doesn't look like that now it's in the car

I'll be getting a few more pics of it fitted in the car along with a few other bits which I have going on and a major change to follow over the next couple of months!

Any update this is awesome!

Cheers dude! It's a serious amount of work lol! I seeked help from another polo owner who had them in. You have to chop up the polo railed and do some welding it took me a whole day just cutting it up and planning and I'm still not really that happy with how they sit so they'll be coming out and will be re-done after the next month or 2 :)

So driving to uni this week for a pointless lecture (as always haha) and hit 70k!

As I said before major things are starting to happen for the car cosmetically over the next couple of months so after getting my GTI boot lid I was planning on selling my old one but metal comes in handy so I started to chop some of it up today to smooth my boot lid!

I have also ordered a boot popper as I like the fully smoothed look :)

Thanks man! Means a lot especially in the state it is in lol. It will be getting dropped again soon don't worry  what number plate thing? Where it sits or what I have smoothed off?

ah fair enough, only place i could really put it without sticky pads or anything! It has now been lowered just been busy before it leaves me this weekend haha update is required! 

Just before I decided I wanted a smooth boot I went down to my local TPS after ringing looking for a bumper which I had also been searching for for a while! I've always loved the jap spec bumper, I'm one for being different (even though it's been done I know, just don't see many) plus I prefer the square plate! I had to wait around 10 days and I rang them to see if it had arrived and it did! Because some t***er decided to break my indicator and rip the lense off it whilst I was at work I borrowed my bro's car to pick it up. Like a kid in a sweet shop haha 

 

 

The bumper is now just sat in my room still in the wrapping it's not getting fitted until she's had her makeover. 

Anyway the next thing on my list was to smooth my boot as I said I was doing in the previous pictures. Both badge recess and handle have now been removed and boot popper fitted! If any of you guys want to fit a boot popper my advice would be to give yourself a serious amount of time to route the wiring through the factory rubber sleeve and boot! Took me and my brother well over an hour just to get the cable through the boot and behind the C pillar! I can't weld for my life and have tried so again my brother helped me out here with welding in some plates and filling it over to make it as smooth as possible and here is the finished product :) 

 

 

I also dropped the ride height again nearly how it was in September but I felt that the ride hide back then was silly low especially on 14's. With the roads and speed humps around where I live I wasn't prepared to take the risk of being that low. The front splitter is now sat at roughly a can of beans from the floor and in my opinion is sat at a pretty nice height. Wish I had air that would make life a lot easier hahahah! Anyway here's a pic of after it was finally done. It has settled a little now and has dropped a tiny bit more after driving around :) 

 

 

 

Went down to my cricket ground the other day to help out down there in preparation of the first game of the season. Typical Asian sport LOL! Anyway had the car parked on the pitch and couldn't resist taking this picture. 

 

 

 

That's pretty much all I've been up to! Should be smoothing off the panel gap you see under lights and fitting US mk4 golf side markers this week and she's then leaving me for the biggest job/change yet!

Correct. Seemed logical to get a whole boot lid and pay the extra £20 than trying to get it to fit perfectly level on mine. Especially as the paint was bubbling where it would sit :) 

After the boot had been smoothed off I decided that I wanted the little panel gap under the lights to be smoothed too! So I've taken some before and after pics 

 

 

 

 

This was welded up and skimmed over and not just had a load of filler chucked in waiting for it to crack. Again like the bootlid has had a layer of primer over the top. 

 

Just as I was getting happy with the progress another set back happened :( So I took my mate to go see a car he wanted to buy, ended up buying it and he followed me home. Anyway he disappeared from my rear view so stopped in the hard shoulder. As I was attempting to join back on at this point no-one was kind enough to let me back on I spot something slap bang in the middle of the hard shoulder. Couldn't come to a complete stop so ended up hitting it full on! It took my front lower grill out and left a nice dent on the rear floor which was nice! Lucky in a way that it wasn't anything more serious. 

 

So once this had happened I sourced a new bumper from a local scrap yard and decided to strip the bumper as I had smoothed the rub strip and make cuts for the side markers which I have waiting to go on. 

 

 

 

I decided to wire in the markers as OEM as possible so it came on with ignition as it does with the golfs. I seeked some advice on a facebook page and cracked on. Used a probe to find an ignition live in which case I came straight off the ignition barrel with an in line fuse and routed the cables through the wings and scuttle panel and then into the car. The markers haven't been fitted but used the indicator bulb and all seems to be working. Just a quick picture of the lower dash out. 

 

 

This day was finally coming! It was her last ever wash before it leaving me for paint! I have marked out the problem areas which needed correcting before dropping the car off to the body shop. 

 

I was going to do the prep myself however, the rain came pouring down when I left myself the time to do it, so I have given the bodyshop this and discussed colours and how I wanted it. Plus my aim is to get this ready for GTI Inters as that is the next show I am going to :) 

 

 

 

There may be small updates on the iPod dock but since I don't have the car no major updates until she's back! Only been a day and feel lost haha.

I did get quoted for a basic job with nothing being removed in the same colour £3k so not cheap but I guess what you pay is what you get. However, my old man works with someone who does bodywork and paint so I'm paying a considerable amount less. As for colour it's out the ordinary  this includes door shuts, inside of boot and all doors. Only thing that won't be getting painted is the engine bay and the inside of the car. Only not painting engine bay is 1. it's a lot of hassle and 2. if I ever have to take the engine out I'd be tempted not to but the same one back in haha. 

 

Wheels it's going on old Mercedes SL hub caps which I found really cheap! I wanted to run polished Mercedes alloys but sourcing 4x100 to 5x112 adapters are hard to come by and if I got them specially made really expensive! 

So I know this hasn't been updated in nearly a month but as I said before the car left me to get her new make over! However, I have been busy again with small modifications for when I get her back for good hopefully! So Some of you may remember the tweeter pods which I had modified before and flocked them in purple.. Well they aren't flocked anymore and have been modified again so that the tweeters sit further in the pod itself and it has been re fiberglassed and shaped to how I wanted them. These will be getting trimmed in the same purple suede the rest of my interior currently is. But here they are for now 

 

 

Also some of you may remember the ipod dock which I wanted in my coin tray! Well that was also chopped up and painted in chameleon paint which looks awesome in the sun! But this may be getting changed in the future as I ran out of paint like an idiot so I may have to order some more and paint it again properly at a later date but this is what it looks like at the moment. 

 

Whilst the car was being painted I received some pictures through of the progress. They are in the order which I received them and also I didn't really want to tell anyone the colour until it was colour sanded and polished but I'm far too excited haha. So here goes! Let me know what you guys think of my colour choice! 

 

 

Also whilst I was getting new things I ordered some orange side repeaters and a brand new GTI splitter! When I rang tps and asked for the price of a splitter I was shocked at how expensive they are for what it is! Needs must though ay so I went ahead and bought one and it came the very next day for me to pick up. 

 

 

The next thing for me to do is to go and find some steel wheels for my mercedes SL circa hub caps which I need by the end of the week ideally as I am due to have the car back within the week or start of next week and finally get the seats welded up properly and fitted including the rears (which if anyone on here knows how it can be done please help me out!!) and finally the boot build which is under construction. Just finialising the box and making sure there are no air leaks and it sounds decent. Then it'll be time for a false floor with my amp on show.
