Adrian's 6n2 SE - Back after a few years.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm sure nobody will remember me seeing as I pretty much just floated about in the background about 6 years ago.. but I'm back in a polo after a few years in a candy white 5 door 1.4 8V SE. Rapid bruv.. honestly thought it was broken the first time I drove it. But here it is!!

A little history.

I was originally on here back around 2009 and owned a flash red 6n that I didn't really do anything significant with.

In 2013, I sold my polo to buy a Golf 1.8t because I wanted to do some subtle tuning and wanted a change after 4 years with my polo.

I picked up a 34k mile minter mk4 golf 1.8t that had been in a retired gents garage for 11 years and was completely standard. Did some minor tuning and got it running a steady 222bhp and 247ftlb.

About a month ago, someone pulled into me and that was the end of my Golf. Absolutely gutted.

Within the last month, I took in a 74k mile 6n2 as part exchange at work and decided to save it from the scrapper pile, give it a new lease of life, and get back on the polo scene… Here we go!!

Model:

VW Polo 6N2 SE

Engine:

1.4 8v. Savage.

Suspension:

Standard (FK Coilovers ordered within 30 mins of ownership)

Brakes:

Standard

Wheels and Tyres:

Standard

Exterior Styling:

Standard

Interior Styling:

Standard

ICE and Security:

VW Gamma Tape deck, with OEM 6 disc cd changer from Golf mk4 GTI

Got a couple of plans with it. Already have FK coil overs ordered (had to order them, so did this 30 mins after buying the car), get some wheels.. Also considering a GTI conversion for it because 222bhp, to 60bhp was a noticeable step back in power.

When I bought the car the drivers electric window didn't work and the switch would only send the passenger window down, regardless of whether I pushed the button up or down.. Turning the key in the drivers lock barrel didn't control the central locking either, although the passenger side did. and the lock button thats inside the car didn't work. I know how bad the wiring is in polos of this age so went straight for the wiring at the door hinge. low and behold, broken wires that had been previously repaired. Soldered the wires up and it all works!!

Also took the "polo" badge off the boot and gave the whole car a good clay bar sesh and t-cut the whole thing to try and restore the shine followed by a good polish. Came out lovely!

I noticed that my new polo has the same tape deck as my Golf, but no CD player. I decided to whip my 6 disc OEM changer out of my Golf and put it in my Polo. 5 min job, buzzing off this!! Considering putting the changer above the head unit though.

Just waiting for coil overs to arrive now.

Started a discussion last night at the pub about putting a 1.6 16v in it with the AFH head and a few other bits to squeeze some power out of it. My older brother told me that I can have a spare turbo if I want too, that I didn't even know he had. Turns out that the turbo is brand new and never been used either.

Got the front coilovers fitted last night and rears this morning. Can't believe how even its sat even though I guessed the height. Going to see how it all settles down and then lower the rear 10mm.

Sweet car in a pretty hard to find colour.

Cheers! Grown to really like the car really quickly, it's just lacking power.

Went to the scrapyard this morning because I heard there was a gti in there. Unfortunately the main grill and splitter had been taken, and the lower centre grill looked like it had been snapped on removal.. But managed to get the honeycomb fog grills.

plan.

Turns out that I have a spare turbo knocking about that started out life on a Renault megane 1.5 dci on a k9k engine. It's brand new and never been used.

After a couple of pints last night at the pub with my brother and some good friends, it was brought up that I should use my spare turbo, so I've decided that I'm going to turbo my 1.4 8v until either the gearbox or engine goes pop, then just replace them as and when.

Compression ratio is 10.5:1 so not the best for turboing. The turbo is pretty small though so only going to run it low boost and control it with a manual boost controller.

It's pretty much going to be trial and error, I'll see if it's running rich or lean, and either raise or lower the boost accordingly. I'll read what the lambda is picking up on vagcom.

Still need to do look into it deeper, but only going for a budget turbo setup.
