Hi all, it seems I've found myself a member of Club Polo, it all started with a little purchase...

 

I got hold of a cheapy 6N2 for £300 for the other half to pass her test in (bear with me, it's not that boring!)

obviously I am a complete fool for spending so little for a car, but judging by the pictures you can see why I bought it... It's got a nice little set of coil overs and drives like an absolute go kart, so naturally being a typical bloke I love it to bits! 

Unfortunately after a couple of weeks of testing its paces and putting some serious mileage on it, it's little gremlins came out to play, and left me on a hard shoulder for a few hours.

I'm awaiting his return with a new gearbox and exhaust, the arrival of the mortgage to pay the dodgy garage that's fixing him, and the blind eye from her royal highness, then the tinkering shall begin! Nothing too serious engine wise (YET ;]) but mostly aesthetics to begin with.

 

ill keep this updated and no doubt cry to some of you when I can't fix things, thanks for having me :)

Haha, you know something I don't! Lost first and fifth gear, they forgot to put the alignment pin into the gearbox when they put it in, there's a lot of gremlins in the car so far 

Yeah first and fifth went on my last 2 gearboxes, currently waiting on this one going as the whining has begun  Remember reading something a while back saying that there was a place that does reconditioned boxes and they supposedly use much stronger internals. How true this is i don't know, think I'm going to have to read into it again for the near future haha.

With these cars the best thing you can do is get a gearbox specially repaired. Christian has a great write up about it on his site.

It it was as expected, a friend of mine has taken it to his workshop and had a good little look at it and the only word he could describe for the gearbox was 'f**ked!' Obviously a byproduct of the backstreet garage that stole my money...

 

im seriously considering buying @heartagram's GTI engine, but I'm not sure on the conversion needed from a 1.4 16V needed for a GTI? I've done a little look into getting it shipped from geordieland to the Isle of Gripe and its £170, if it's an easy swap I may have to oblige
