some info on improving your mk2f  GT, not a comprehensive post so feel free to add you tips 

 

these are the quick power gains

• high lift cam 264 / 268 / 270 - the biggest gain is made here. dont forget new tappets
• 4 branch manifold and exhaust system - dont go to large or it will cost you power
• bigger injectors 
• better air filter 
• chipped ecu

those probably account for 95% of the gain you can get from the engine 

 

the next lot help to pull a few extra horses out for those who really want to put the work in:
• skimmed head / port matched with inlet / exhaust
• de-wedged ported throttle body 
• lightened flywheel - not really power but will spin the engine up faster. be warned if the fly is to light the crank will wear its bearings

 

in opposition to porting the inlet you can use a NZ/G40 inlet with smaller holes to fill in the gap created by the highlift cam moving the powerband higher

 

above all refresh the electric and cooling systems to have a solid runner

    no dont buy a g40 cam...you can ring newman and ask for the 268/268 although ive seen one latley and it looked terrible quality   id pay the extra for a schrick if you can manage

If you know how to set them up than a Mk2 Golf AFM can give a decent boost in power. They are less restrictive anyway so could be a good addition if you have other mods on the inlet side.

 

Personally I think the best thing about the GT is the GT gearbox. The short ratios really make the most of the lack of torque and help keep the revs in the power band.

• 8k chipped ecu

• 421 with jettex g40 system 

 

The big difference is how you set the timing, ignition timing, mix and idle

 

The exact same setup can be slow or fast depending on those factors

Hey can anyone help. 

 

I can't find a cam for the Polo GT. 

Looking at getting a newman 270/270 cam for the Polo GT.

 

The ones on ebay are listed for the Polo G40. Will this also fit the polo GT?

These guys still do a chip for the 2F GT. I've sent off an inquiry along with my ECU part number.

My chip has arrived from MaxRPM, i had to send a picture of the guts of the ECU. Import duty and tax was 50 quid...I'm going with a full original engine bay, so the price is the price.

So the MaxRPM chip is now installed in the spare ECU and has been tested by ATC Drivetrain and found to be fault free, however it's not problem free. The idle mixture is ridiculously rich and i had to warm it up on the stock ECU as it wouldn't run from cold on the chipped ECU. It is a bit nippier out on the road with the chipped ECU in it, but the idle problems are so severe i couldn't realistically live with it. There is a photo attached.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My idle speed screw on the throttle body is at 2 turns and my CO screw on the AFM is at 2.5 turns. The timing is at 8'btdc.

Another one; what's this about Digifant being a 'learning system' and needing driving time to self-adjust?

It's too rich, the injector pulses are too long in the lower bands for sure. I had the CO screw out 9 turns which just about kept it running at cold idle, but it's rough. The Digilag is still there when the throttle snaps open, but at WOT the powerless gulf from 2000-3500 is far less pronounced than on the stock chip.

I need to acquire some equipment to remap the chip myself; does anyone have any, or can anyone post a parts list of things i need to buy? Terms that keep popping up in threads:

All I'm going to write below is total speculation, without any technical backup:

As I understand it, GT's only really use the Air Flow Meter when they're cold, then just the lambda when they're warm. Have you tried it with the AFM unplugged?

I'm wondering if the chip you've got is designed for a different Air Flow Meter (Golf ones were a popular mod back in the day), or if this gives you any information you need to adjust yours a bit?

Other than that, I'd be thinking of running some sort of AFR gauge and tuning to the emissions.

If i pull the plug out of the AFM when its cold it stalls in seconds. If i pull it out when it's warm it keeps running albeit with cyclical unstable idle speed.

I've yet to hear back from MaxRPM. I sent an email, but no reply.

Have you reset the ignition timing (via the very weird procedure GT's need)?

I have set the ignition timing to 8deg btdc with the car in service adjustment mode, it's been set like that for years now and i didn't put it back to 6 when i installed the chipped ECU. Retarding it would give it less time to burn all this extra petrol anyway. I chose 8 because the pickup when revving freely out of gear is noticeably better. MaxRPM think they may have installed the wrong map, they have replied to me now.

I've just done the exhaust header calculations again for this cam, i don't have the data, but i assumed an exhaust opens point of 52deg, i got that from a similar Schrick. The length came back as 215mm.

That more than doubles with a Schrick 268 to 450mm for 6krpm, or 500mm for 5.5krpm. I'd love to know why the duration is so short on the Rottele cam, it might have something to do with torque. It also might be designed to run with the cast iron short manifold, given some of the header figures that come back.

Question, what's the largest cc injector you can run in a GT without causing problems? I'd like to try swapping a set of BMW ones in with better atomisation, they are 176cc, stock GT ones are 155cc
