6n2 Gti knocking when turning the steering wheel

As title, my car has developed a knocking noise when I turn the steering wheel. It seems to be coming from the drivers side front wheel. I have had a look and noticed that the drivshaft is leaking a little, could this be the cause of the noise? If not what could it be?
