milometer stops counting

Hi the milometer stops rotating even though the speedometer continues to work. MK 2 Bread-van with speedometer with a trip meter, large clock as second instrument. If the car is driven off the drive in reverse the milometer works for about 20 miles before stopping again and resetting the trip doesn't help. Is there a fix for this please.
