1.3 8v Cam pulley

Featured Replies

I am in the process of building a 1.3 8v. I have just purchased a water pump kit to find it has the V toothed pulley and belt. Anyone have a lead on a v toothed cam pulley I can purchase?

Thanks,

Jordan

  • I feel like there may be something lost in communication here - are you sure you mean a 'V' tooth or is it more like a chamfered square? I'd personally call the polo timing belt profile square rather

  • sounds like he wants to fit another pulley to the incorrect pump rather than swap it for the correct pump   life doesnt have to be that hard...just send it back

Send the pump back and buy the correct one

sounds like youve been sold the wrong parts

I mean yes, that’s what I said? What I’m asking is, does anyone know where I can find a pulley to fit the parts I have? There must be one as I have the water pump and belt for it?  I can’t find the earlier style water pump kit anywhere

You won't find a pulley as it's meant to have a flat belt not a V belt,

It’s not a V belt, I didn’t say that. I said the teeth on the flat belt are V shaped, as opposed to the earlier square teeth on the belt. I’ll look myself, thanks for your help

I feel like there may be something lost in communication here - are you sure you mean a 'V' tooth or is it more like a chamfered square? I'd personally call the polo timing belt profile square rather than a 'V', although it does taper.

I assume you've got a Mk2f? With that assumption there is only one timing sprocket tooth profile (and therefore timing belt tooth profile) for all Mk2f engine codes, apart from maybe the diesel 1W - they all share the same sprocket:

https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/polo+derby+vento-ind/po/1993-120/1/109-6030/#3

The correct belts vary in length but all have the same square tooth profile (again, not sure about diesels):

https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/polo+derby+vento-ind/po/1993-120/1/109-6000/#3

If you somehow found a timing sprocket with a v-tooth profile you'd have to replace the crankshaft pulley too as it does the driving of it.

The right kit for your car would be something like: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/bosch/1191751

As has been said above - best to just send the parts back if they don't fit your engine and get the correct water pump and belt. If, however, there is something weird going on and you've got the wrong timing sprocket on your head then this is what you're looking for:

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/jp-group/8171326

Again - I'm making assumptions about your engine here based on limited info and your avatar thumbnail.

I have an 86c. Ignore my

picture though as it’s not the engine out of that I’m building. The sprocket In the first link looks different to the one I have. And the sprocket in the last link is 100% different. I would obviously rather fit the parts that work with the sprockets I already have I’m hesitant to order another kit because they all seem to have the same profile as the sprockets you have linked here?

My sprocket is what I assume to be the earlier style with the flat square teeth

If its an 86c then the parts will be different to what i posted above as they were for an 86cf.

https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/polo+derby+vento-ind/po/1989-9/1/109-6000/#2

Have a look on 7zap yourself for your year and doublecheck what part number sprocket your engine should have - i find copy and pasting the part number into autodoc or google normally throws up a result for a picture or parts to source.

I think you have a pump and belt for an 86cf (Mk2f) rather than an older Mk2. If this is the case not only will the tooth profile be off but the number of teeth on the belt would likely be wrong too.

Needed editing

you just need a better seller ...many inexperienced places list stuff as fits all when it doesnt

somewhere like avs car parts , ring or email and tell them what you want and they will get you the right parts...or keep buying from places with easy returns and seach by part number

Think i may have a spare cam pulley  round and square tooth

Its better to upgrade to round tooth 128, as it has more surface contact than square and handles more torque

If you swap the cam pulley you will also have to swap the crank pulley too. Also, depending on the engine, you may not be able to do this (early solid lifter engines never came with v-toothed cam sprockets for example).

What engine do you have? Swapping the water pump for the correct one really is the best way to go rather than swapping all your other pulleys to match an incorrect pump
