Hi All, 

 

I have a problem where when I start - starts fine, but then starts heavily chugging. Will clear after a few heavy revs after the engine has warmed up a little - but when  leaving for work at 6:30 I don't think the heavy revs are appreciated by the neighbours...!!

 

Any diagnosis?

It'll most likely be either your blue temperature sensor needs replacing (for a proper OEM one - cheap ones from Euro Car Parts etc often fail) or the signal from the sensor isn't getting to the ECU. The sensor is practically a maintenance part on these cars by the looks of things - a whole heap of running troubles often start with them failing.

 

I went through the same problem for ages until I found it was the signal wire that was playing up - or more specifically the earth from the sensor. My ECU was seeing infinite resistance accross the sensor which it was translating to -40C, effectively forcing the engine to run on its richest setting all the time. When cold this produces chugging, when warm its bearable but you're still burning too much fuel. I had that problem for a year and ended up killing a cat converter and a lambda sensor as a result so its best to get it sorted sooner rather than later!

 

 

yes thats the first things to check ...and the wiring needs checking with a meter to confirm its good end to end , not just a casual yeah its okay visual inspection

1983 1L. Completely standard apart from a weber carb fitted.

Ah, yes slightly different then, or at least I don't have any experience with the Mk2. The reson may be different but the effect is the same - its over-fuelling i'd say

its a carb /choke issue ...does it have manual choke ?

Yeah manual choke. Fires up fine runs for a few seconds then will chug like mad before a few heavy revs and 30 secs / 1 minute of getting warm. Too much choke on fire up flooding the engine maybe ???

yeah maybe you need prcatice using the choke ...you would push the lever after start up to maintain a nice idle  ., maybe you are using too much choke

When you get into the car in the morning do the following. 

 

Press the throttle pedal once, wait, press once again. Remove foot from pedals, turn key to ignition on, wait 5-10 seconds, turn to start. 

Ah, just seen it's a manual choke. 

 

Then it's a bit of practice to find the sweet spot on the choke.

Don't normally need full choke but about 3/4 is normally enough.
