There's only the multiplug to connect to that isn't there? It did have a welding done around battery tray but the clocks weren't working before that and guy who did the work knows VWs well and would have been careful. The piece under the smaller screw just above the VW badge wasn't secure and I'd put back under that to see if it had popped out or would make a difference................it didn't.

 

The spark that repaired the clocks last year sent me a pic with lights lit, I plugged in before fitting and everything worked, then when I connected up the speedo and located them properly they didn't work and haven't since. At that point I was assuming clocks fine and wiring fault, tried another set and they didn't work which definately pointed at wiring. He got a got reading from all the points on the plug and was confident wiring ok, took the clocks to test and said about that earth point being knackered

id find out what wires are earth and lights on 12v ...then play around with some wire and a spare car battery 

 

might need an earth adding somewhere 

 

shouldnt be too hard....is 12v and earth present at the plug ?   does 12v and earth make the clocks light up ?  if need be run seperate wires direct

Cheers for help dude. I would have thought he'd have tried that.......but you never know!  I know when mate looked at it for me he'd tried a separate earth but no joy.

Something daft, but looking at clocks on ebay (this set seriously overpriced £125 😳) but noticed that there's a black surround where plug goes, if you check pic of mine that's not there, could something like that have any effect???

I'm assuming that it was there and came back after they were repaired without it. There was a fair bit of time lapse from I took them out so maybe haven't noticed missing.

 

When I did plug them in before I held the plug and wiggles it about etc to see if made any difference.

Cheers 🍻 I'd assumed that's what it was for but wasn't sure how much of an effect there would be if it wasn't there,  definately isn't on mine anymore for whatever reason.

If the contacts on your wiring connector (car side) are a bit flattened without the clamp holding the connector into the speedo it might just be enough to break the contact and stop it from working 

It would be ace if something as daft was to sort it! Guy I know may have clocks for me, should know in next day or so 🤞

UPDATE:

Got a set off a mate lastnight, threw them in quickly and lights lit up! The temp and oil lights were both flashing and the fuel gauge didn't budge though. I didn't start the car up as I only had a couple of mins and couldn't wait until this afternoon to try them lol. Can't remember if they normally flash until engine started or not and the plug mightn't have been fully in. Progress nonetheless 😁

 

Hopefully get at it this evening and then get MOT booked if it's all ok 

😁yeeeeeeeoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! New clocks in and all seems ok! Mot booked online there, earliest I could get was a month away, but I'll push for a cancellation. Ho
