Project Phoebe '82 saloon build

Featured Replies

Introducing my build thread! I bought Phoebe back in April 2020 without even viewing the car. A friend of mine has been ro view the car a few months earlier but the price was too high so he walked away. After some late night (potentially influenced by Carlsberg Export) Internet searching, I agreed on a price and got it trailered to me.

Generally speaking it is in decent condition. Its currently sat at 69k and has a 1.0L engine and 4 speed box. I drove it for a few months and it was great to be back in an old vw again.

So Phoebe is now off the road and the teardown begins. Im basically searching for rust and so far its remarkable how little I have found.

Heres the plan for its first build:

Full strip down, all underseal and panel sealent removed.

Repair any rust areas.

Re apply underseal

1.4 8v AUD on CBR600 bike carbs.

5 speed box.

Custom stainless full exhaust system

Pirelli P Slots

H&R 60/40 shocks and springs

Poly rear shock top bushes

Poly rear beam bushes

5 speed ARB with ARB blocks

Poly front arm bushes

Battery and washer bottle relocated to boot

Fit correct rear bumper when I find one that isn't £10000000000000

Remote 2 circuit brake servo in scuttle

Mk2 golf front brake setup with audi 50 carriers

Potentially do a rear disc conversion but not sure yet

Aftermarket radiator fan

Engine bay wiring tidy up

Front and rear speaker install

New carpet

Mk1 Scirocco front seats.

That's it for now!

In the future it will be having a full respray, full interior retrim, ITB's instead of the carbs, engine bay smooth and wiring tuck. I want to run it as above for now and see whay snags come up. Ive set myself 12 months, so I will keep you updated!

Great, another early saloon! Same year as mine. Should have the square front light though :-(

Not a fan of the square headlights. Plus people want silly money for them haha.

Looks like a great straight solid  car to start with 🙂

Its pretty solid yeah. Just the battery tray has rotten, bottom of both wings , a little bit near the fuel tank filler and all the arch lips. Not bad for 38 years old!

Happy days, easy sorted! The metal was definately better in the earlier MK2s
