Breadvan HZ Pierburg 1B3 Carb Mount woes

Featured Replies

I’m probably facing the task of having to change the infamous 1B3 Rubber Carb mount on my 1043HZ Breadvan, but want to fit the best quality one I can.

I had previous problems with the deterioration of the original VW mount and have in the past fitted about 3 different makes of pattern part ones which, quite frankly, all seem to be absolute rubbish quality. The 1st one split after about 6 months, then two others that lasted less than that.I also found that as well as the rubber splitting, the pattern ones also have ‘inserts’ for the carb bolts that can easily pull out of the metal plates that the mounting is made up of.

In desperation and after the failure of the last pattern part, I ended up refitting the original VW/Pierburg mounting, along with some home made paper gaskets(proper gasket paper) and some permatex petrol resistant gasket compound, which amazingly lasted over 6 years. However, that was only possible as it was the surface between the carb and the mount that was at fault. Now it seems there is another air leak from further deterioration of the mounting, which I can’t ‘bodge’ in the same way.

Original Pierburg/VW ones are not available anymore and  I used to source rare Pierburg Genuine Parts for the 1B3 from Ruddies-Berlin in Germany, but he has retired and is no longer trading.

I’ve had ‘Rubbex’ ‘Original Birth’ and I think ‘Viaco’ pattern ones fail, other pattern ones available seem to be mainly Hans Preis Topran(who seem to just rebox parts that can come from anywhere) and JPGroup from Denmark.

VW Heritage seem to sell the Topran brand. The original VW part number for the mount is 0301297065C or Pierburg 3.50000.34.0.

The question is, which brand  of mount has anyone found to be of decent quality and who have we found to be a reputable supply source?

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts and experiences on this subject, so I can have a fighting chance of getting a replacement that lasts years rather than months.

I have fitted the JPGroup version of 030129765C. I actually had to saw away a bit that was in the way of my manual choke arm. But do mind that I have a weber 32 tlm installed,  not the pierburg 1b3. Apart from that the flange seems to seal properly, at least for the one year I used it. More I Cannot guarantuee....
Because I had to refit the carb quite often over the year and kept on tightening the threaded bolts back into the flange, it started to push down the holes and split open the flange. So probably more my own fault.
I guess it can work for years if you don't screw in the wire cable too much 🙂

I have found Febi mounts to be good quality. Dunno if they do a 1b3 suitable...

Birth Spa are usually okay. Yes, Hans Pries (Topran) are variable quality. But switchgear is excellent I find. Not seen or used a Vaico? mount.

Try not to over-tighten.

Might be worth checking the engine rubber mounts as these transmit pothole shocks when worn, especially if shock absorbers also aging.

Cheers for that and the Febi part number in your later post.Clearly, as a newbie I need to brush up on using the forum search facility😀😉

Unfortunately it seems Febi no longer make the 02364, which is a shame as I’d have probably gone for one of those.None showing on eBay either.Last one was sold by a Lithuanian seller back in December.

You mention Switchgear? Have you anymore details on these, I’ve never heard of them when looking trawling through the T’internet.

I’ll certainly take on board the over tightening suggestion and checking the engine mounts though, when I do get to renew the carb mounting.I can be a bit heavy handed, I think it’s goes back to the days of Pre-torque wrench settings on everything, whereby you just just ‘sensed’ when a bolt or nut was tight enough! I know that when using a torque wrench now I’m sometimes thinking ‘is that really tight enough?’

'switchgear'. Sorry, missing space meant that looked a bit like a brand name.

I meant, as for Hans Pries, their switches are good quality.

When i fitted my weber, i was lucky enough to find someone locally who could machine parts through FB. Gave him my old mount as a pattern and he made me a 2 piece custom mount that uses 4 long bolts. Works a treat.

That was just shy of 3 years ago. Apart from cleaning and resealing it when i had to replace frost plug on my intake manifold, no issues as yet.

Is there anywhere that do a guaranteed good quality flange for the HZ?

I'd to get a topran for mine a few months ago as needed one in a panic and it was the only one I could find. The car isn't on the road yet but hopefully will be shortly and I'm not filled with confidence as to how long this will last.

don’t suppose you have any photos of it?

how was it sealed to the manifold and carb, did you have to make some gaskets?

I would seriously look and having one prefabbed if the latest rubber one I’ve bought disintegrates, as the others did.

I don't have any pics of it seperated from the car, but i will post some tomorrow of it in place.

Literally, gave the old mount to the guy who cut it, he used that as a template so apart from the four long studs, which i just used long bolts, it looks just like the rubber mount. It could be possible, if you have a couple sheets of steel, you could cut it out yourself.

I have put some gasket paper and blue hylomar in between. Purely because the way it was cut, it could have warmed the metal up and possibly caused minor warping. Gasket paper and hylomar are just a precaution. So far, so good, 3 years later.

I don't got any pics of the whole thing.
