Need help handbrake/mk1/audi50

Featured Replies

My Audi50 handbrake doesnt lock onto any position.

It seems the handbrake pawl/ratchet part is broken only, because the lever does move the brake cable and rear brakes.
Only the handbrake lever doesnt lock onto position.

Dissemly of the whole lever system is very difficult, because space around the lever is minimal.
Any help on how should I dissemble the handbrake lever system, or how should I proceed with the problem? Thank you!

Regards Heikki

You should be able to see the ratchet mechanism with a small mirror once the lever is raised. It's most likely that it needs cleaning or at worst, some lubrication. If you can't find a way to visually inspect it, it's probably worth giving it a spray. The lever mechanism as as basic as it looks in the diagram, they're not bad to take apart, I would recommend disconnecting the cable at the adjuster under the car before you start. Make sure you've got some new circlips in case you need them (Lidl and Aldi quite often have assorted packs)

Just a thought, someone hasn't converted it into a "fly-off" as used in most rally cars, where you need to pull up the lever and then push the button to lock it ??

I believe a fly-off is not the case.

I got the lever off by cutting the handbrake cable. The nut for the cable was too rusty to even try opening it.

Im guessing the rusty pivot  for pawl or just rusty pawl is the answer for the lever. Now its soaked in wd40. Thanks for help!
