Hi thanks very much for the reply. I already gave the connectors inside the door hinge a good blast of contact cleaner which fixed the issues  with the central locking and courtesy light but unfortunately not the windows. There was deffo some corrosion and greenie meanies inside the connectors. Will have another go at it and check the continuity on that lilac/white wire. Thanks again.

Hi Pete,

Finally got around to working on the electric windows on my Polo 9n3. Was wondering if you had any other insights into what the issue might be -

Removed both door panels, removed the connectors from the electric window motors on both sides and check the continuity on pin 3 (lilac/white wire). Seems fine reading 0.05ohms so I don't believe that is the issue?

Voltage to ground on lilac/white wire with only the driver side connected is 1.5v
Voltage to ground on lilac/white wire with only the passenger side connected is 10.5v (or 12.5v with engine running)

Is that normal? Still wondering if it's a fault to the circuit board in the drivers side motor?

Symptoms are that the passenger side window does not work from either the drivers side or passenger side switch, however by unplugging the connector and plugging it back in it will work temporarily from the passenger side switch until you lock the car and the system resets. I've tried changing the passenger side motor for another one with the same result?

Many Thanks

Probably simplest to try another driver's side motor to see if that sorts it.

Can do you a returnable exchange one on a refundable-if-no-fix basis if you like, give or take postage costs.

Photo of existing one?

And passenger side too please, just the main VAG part number labels.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The drivers side, as you can see it must have already been replaced once a few years ago before I got the car, has a date code of 2018. Don't know if this means it's an improved design, or if they all have the same fault regardless? I think I've ruled out the wiring, the connectors inside the door hinges, the driver's side door switches and continuity on the lilac/white wire from one side to the other but can't be 100% sure. Presumably if the motor on the passenger side has power and connectivity on the LIN bus lilac/white wire then it should work right? As I say driver's side works fine but passenger's side only works on the passenger side switch if you unplug it/remove the fuse and then plug it back in. Tried 2 different motors both the same fault.

So if you think it's fixable please PM me the details for posting it to you. Many thanks!

Interesting.

The VW750 bit on that label tells me that it's a motor for a T5 Transporter rather than a Polo (would say VW240 instead).

I doubt that alone would result in the observed misbehaviour on passenger side though.

I've never seen 'mix and match' pairings like that on my test rig show such behaviour.

Will be interesting to see what you have on passenger side.

Passenger side one that's currently screwed on is correct for Polo, other one is from a mk2 Fabia (SK250).

Have you tried the following:

Starting with locked car, put key in driver's door lock, turn to unlock but keep key held round in that position for a couple or three  seconds more. Does either front window start to come down?

Passenger side is the bottom picture which I believe is the original one, although I've also tried the other one in the middle picture which I recently bought on ebay. Even though the drivers side motor is from a T5 It was working absolutely fine like that for about 3 years.

Just tried that, held the key for 20 seconds and neither window rolled down. Central locking/interior light work as they should so it's not the electronics in the door lock. I remember that trick did used to work a year or two ago...

I'll try a couple of quick experiments here today @dav, but something came back to me last night that may have relevance.

Another member and I went through all sorts to solve similar symptoms including (I think) two different replacement motors, about 5 pages of PMs and more whatsapp chats before he discovered that there was a loose connection at the LIN connection to passenger side motor. Wedging a matchstick in next to the cable entry/terminal in the loom plug proved to be an effective fix! 😆

Not sure if it's still like that, haven't heard from him in a while.

Just tried that on my test rig, with LIN wire disconnected at passenger motor. (Disconnecting anywhere will have same effect).

At least two things work abnormally, one of which you have seen already.

1. Neither motor runs in response to the door lock key turned/held either way.

2. Door opening difference; which you could test quickly and easily on yours.

In normal operation with ignition on and doors closed, if you turn off the ignition, the windows will continue to both work for only 10 minutes as long as the doors remain closed.  If you open the driver's door though, they stop working immediately instead.

However, with LIN connectivity interrupted, the driver's side window continues to work after ignition off and door opened. It still stops working after 10 minutes from ignition off.

See if you can replicate observation 2 as well as 1 please @dav. And grab a couple of matchsticks! 😁

Hi Pete,

Exciting update! I think you are right, it appears to be a dodgy connection on the LIN wire from motor to the connector, which was something I hadn't considered until you suggested it. Jamming the multimeter probes in a certain way appears to fix the issue, and makes the voltage 10v with passenger side disconnected. Even the window up/down thing when you turn the key in the door works now. I am now scared to touch anything in case it stops working again, might just have to drive the car around like this from now on! There were also corroded wires inside both the door hinge connections.

Many thanks, probably wouldn't have got to the bottom of it without your help!

Glad we didn't get into shipping motors back and forth. 👍

Maybe try to grab some spare loom connectors from a scrappie, then you could cut and shut to replace whichever looks dodgiest on your car?

I was able to tweak the dodgy plug connections and pins with a pick/mini screwdriver and cleaned the rest up with electrical contact cleaner, just put it all back together again. Can't remember when all the electrics worked on this car at the same time! Going to put dielectric grease on the door hinge connectors and seal up the bellows with silicone to stop it going wrong again. Thanks again for your help!

Here's yet another cry for help to Pete1! I'm completely new here - just joined, so please excuse any mistakes. I have a lovely 1.4HDI 9n Polo registered in late 2005. I'm having multiple strangenesses with window motors. Sometimes they work (only the front ones are electric) and sometims they don't, or just the passenger one does. I haven't  does any dismantling yet. But the battery being disconnected for a few hours brought them back into working. And then they didn't, but then after locking / deadlocking and unlocking using the key (whilst sitting in the driver's seat) brought them back again. So I don't think it's broken wires or bad connections, or even failed motors. It definitely feels like electronics gone a bit quirky.

So, if you spot this, Pete1, I'm in the market for some help!! I have the VIN number available and could take the driver's door card off, but the weather's a bit against me at the moment!

Anyway, thanks for all your information, fellow Polo owners. I'm very grateful, as otherwise I would be doubting my sanity by now!

Hi Andy, that sounds like something I can help you with. A late 2005 car is going to have the 6Y1959801 part number I believe (unless it was built a long time before being registered), but if you want to let me know the VIN I can look it up to be sure.

I'll message you now, with a contact number etc.

Pete

Hi Pete, Thanks for your quick reply! I'm not sure whether I'm PM-ing this or whether it's in the thread. If it is, apologies all. Pete - the VIN is WVWZZZ9NZ6Y117115.

If you can get contact info to me, that would be fab. Andy

My wifes central locking and electric windows literally stopped working overnight on her VW POLO 56 plate, i searched the het and came across Club Polo  and found Pete1's post about the repair service. So i got in contact with him and sent him the window motor for test and repair, i got it back within a couple of days all fixed, i have just fitted it back on and its all working perfectly.

I cannot recommend Pete1 service enough, he is a diamond.

Hi Pete,

I have picked up your email address from the clubpolo.co.uk site in the hope that you are still offering your services?

My issue is exactly as described in a 4:59 YouTube video posted by ramiz the auto locksmith on 13/10/2023.

Our local garage have diagnosed the problem as a faulty electric window motor module 6Y1959801. The polo VIN is WVWZZZ9NZ8Y053259.

Do you still offer an exchange service?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike, interesting video that describes a common situation with Polos of this age that have electric windows and that don't have RF remote locking.  The window motors have no data connection to the diagnostic system of the car (or anything else except one another), hence the lack of use of any OBDII tools.

Fuse blowing is a new one on me; are you having that too? Difficult to see exactly which wire he has cut there to stop it happening.

I don't have a suitable exchange unit for your car right now, but can put you on a waiting list for the next one to become available if you like. Or you could send me your original for repair.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for your prompt response. Fuses are all fine so that is the only aspect that does not tie in with YouTube clip.

Could you add me to the waiting list for a suitable exchange. We’ve been managing to lock the car from the inside and lastly the drivers door from the outside with the key. Thankfully the windows are closed so a bit of a nuisance on mornings with internal condensation, but the car can be driven so a repair is not absolutely time critical.

Let me know what you need from me at this stage.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Pete,

hoping you can assist with my Daughters 2006 5dr polo.

intermittent issues with central locking and front windows not working, all symptoms point to an issue with the drivers side control unit.

can you please advise if you can exchange for me?

photo of unit too large to attach.

but it is the 6Y1959801 unit.

many thanks,
