Window motor repair service

Good work Jon, glad you're making progress.

I wonder if the previous visit to the drivers side bellows resulted in an imperfect seal of rubber to bodywork, and water has leaked in and corroded connector pins?  Might be able to get a phone camera in for some photos from various angles, or see green or white crusty witness marks on the door loom connector?

Not good that.

I may have some of both halves those crimp inserts, male and female, can have a look over the weekend if you like.

I'm guessing that row of pins in the mating connector won't look very pretty.

Hi Pete

You nailed it in one ! Did some more continuity testing across the Drivers A post , resulting in a fail , so pulled the plugs out which was a bit of a tight space but there it was broken pin in the plug bottom left second one in , connecting the purple / white wire . Corrosion evident , not surprisingly like you said ( exactly) a previous visit has left the bellows not seating well over the plastic bracket it slips over is loose obviously let moisture in . Not sure what to do about the pug connections big deal chopping all those wires in the footwell to put a new plug in , so for now just pieced the connection up with a piece of wire  and siliconed the bellows secure , all working . Thanks again for the heads up not sure I would of got there without it 👍

Not thought of replacing the actual pin inserts may be a way forward assuming I can get to the plug under the A pillar , they have some sort of tang holding them in and a little tool needed to release out of the plug

On the sister car, the Skoda Fabia, that whole connector block can be taken out outwards, and the individual connectors accessed. Haven't studied a Polo to see if it's the same approach. I was pleasantly surprised to find there was enough loom to be able to pull the lot out a bit on the Fabia, unlike Skoda's normal 'juuuust long enough' approach.

The bellows is actually supposed to be removed together with the surround/frame that clips it in, which makes refitting it correctly a doddle. I haven't developed the knack of such 'all at once' removal yet though, I must get the hang of it.

Surprisingly affordable to replace whole bellows plus retaining frame: https://www.lllparts.co.uk/product/6Q0959843M/6q0959843m-genuine-vw-audi

Yes the bellows had the frame inserted in it ,series of tangs around the edge which clip into the frame in the A post , the problem is it’s not staying clipped together don’t know whether the tang’s are worn , hence a bead of silicone just to secure it temporarily in place , not sure either which way the plug in the A post comes out ie backwards under the dash or through out the A post if I was to have a go at pin replacement . Another issue although not big is the lights on speaker doesn’t chirp when you exit the door , although the low fuel light does , I think it’s all the same speaker / buzzer , wondering now after seeing that corroded plug today if that’s anything to do with it . Not had the car long bought it as a project with low compression sorted  all that out along with new brakes , only just starting to drive it and the electrical gremlins started .

£6.72 for the frame can’t argue with that if it stops them plugs corroding. Must admit that makes sense now frame and bellows together already as I struggled quite a bit getting the bellows fitted back correctly

After pulling my hair out with my electric windows not working, I spoke with Pete and posted him the module are rechecking fuse 11 ( mine is a MK1 Fabia) posted the module to Pete.

He diagnosed it and repaired, posted it back. All works.

Thanks, great service and of course working windows.

Thank you.

Pete, big thanks.

Pete recently helped me with a problem with similar symptoms. Turned out to be corrosion in the door connected. He talked it through with me and told me exactly where to look. In my case I didn't need the repair service, but Pete provided me loads of help anyway.

Superb chap, my thanks

Hi Pete

Yes I initially peeled the bellows away as I’ve had fractured wires before , even within a loom ( o2 sensor heater circuit ) but nothing obvious, today I tried another unit (  supposedly working fine ) same results.

This was before I saw your reply , so after reading that went at it again , this time I pulled both bellows well back still nothing showing at the top towards the A post plugs ..,rather than undo the looms further down the bellows I did a continuity test from one plug to the other with both door cards off ( as you said the purple/ white ran from one module to the other ) Result no continuity, as you suspected . So next just to confirm that I ran a fresh wire from one plug purple connection to the other plug connection .
Result …,working windows 👍 confirming indeed a break somewhere . Next up continuity test from plug to wire just before it enters A post plug on both sides . Result continuity…,Running out of daylight at this stage so called it s day for today, but hey at least I’ve narrowed it down to a break in between both A posts , I’m suspecting the Drivers A post connection may be dodgy there was evidence around there of previous mauling with some old Alarm harness . I’m gonna resume tomorrow see if I can find it , if not I’ll run a fresh wire between the confirmed good bits ,

.Right then bud massive thanks for putting me in the right direction with that purple white wire , it was starting to drive me nuts not making any progress , ill

hopefully find the break keep you posted .Excellent advice and tips again 👍

Problem here is when the passenger side window. Was playing up like it did with mine. I also found that the passenger side. Rear view electric mirror packed up at the same time. Because the electric rear view mirror is connected through the electric window mechanism. The minute I replaced the passenger side electric window motor. The rear view electric mirror suddenly started working. ( There are some capacitors that get burnt out, and require someone with the skills to use a soldering iron to replace them ) The wiring on all cars now since the e.c.u. Was introduced to them. Has sure as hell got complicated as f**k. It’s not the same as working on a Peugeot 405. Or any older car. Where you can open a manual and follow a detailed wiring diagram.

Full wiring diagrams are available in pdf form for all VAG-group cars via erWin, for a small fee.

For the generation of Polo with the window motors covered by this repair service, the electric mirrors are independent of the window motor module.. The mirror wiring doesn't go via the WMs.

**Appreciation post**

I have recently had the pleasure of requesting Pete's assistance with an electric window motor fault from a mk2 Fabia.  The windows (front electric) only seemed to work throughout the summer, but were mainly unresponsive during the winter months.  I had removed and tested the motor seperately, tested the continuity in the wiring and also replaced the window switch.   The only thing I could think of as being at fault was the module itself.  But I hadn't considered the module before discovering this incredibly useful thread.  Pete very quickly supplied a repaired unit which worked perfectly, and kindly offered to exchange the faulty unit.  I cannot thank Pete enough for his help with this, it has potentially saved me a whole load time and money, as I had considered buying a brand new unit!

Thank you again Pete 🙏

Just wanted to add to the list of very satisfied clients of Pete. Had the classic issues with the window motor now all sorted very efficiently and economically. I recommend Pete's services unreservedly. Many thanks Pete. CB

Hello Polo People,

I would like to offer a repair service for some types of electric window motor module as fitted to 9N3 Polo, a few Transporters and some mk1/2 Skoda Fabia.

At this stage it applies only to two specific, exact part numbers fitted to the driver's side front door, as follows:

6Y1959801  Fitted to RHD 9N3 Polo, a few Transporters, and very early mk2 Skoda Fabias.

6Y2959802  Fitted to later RHD Mk1 Fabia, from around October 2004.

Left Hand Drive cars will use the other part number in each case.

Part numbers as above but with an at the end are also included now, such as found in cars with rear electric windows too.

Note that both of these are driver's side units, the difference in part numbering is due to the orientation/positioning of the motor module on the panels they mount to in each model.

These parts suffer a type of intermittent, progressive failure where they 'sometimes work fine, sometimes don't work at all'.  This is what I can fix for you.

I will test your faulty unit, confirm the problem, repair it to full working order and post it back to you for £50, total. (Non-UK residents please understand that return postage will add a little as necessary).

You'd post it to me (less than 1Kg so can be sent as a first class small parcel for just £3.68 within UK at present).  I would aim to turn it round within 2 days of receipt, and send it back first class.

This is the what the part looks like (mirror image of this and PN 6Y1959801 on RHD Polo):

20210830_104835.thumb.jpg.48b8beb01209aa08d34422c3a421f169.jpg

Central locking via remote will still work in the absence of the window module, so you will be able to secure the car as normal while it is away.

Obviously you'll want to ensure that both front windows are fully shut, as in the absence of the driver's side module the passenger side one will not operate.

New units are nearly £200 from VW, and ebay 2nd hand ones with these part numbers tend to go for nearly £100.

I will charge you just £50 including return postage.

Cheers,

Pete

I do not own a polo but  a 2007  VWT5 transporter which has the same module.

Would it be possible to get a reconditioned module from you or to send you my one to see if you can find the fault. Both windows stopped working and after checking all the obvious fusesand wiring I am left with the controller unit .

Thanks
