Window motor repair service

Featured Replies

Hello Polo People,

I would like to offer a repair service for some types of electric window motor module as fitted to 9N3 Polo, a few Transporters and some mk1/2 Skoda Fabia.

At this stage it applies only to two specific, exact part numbers fitted to the driver's side front door, as follows:

6Y1959801  Fitted to RHD 9N3 Polo, a few Transporters, and very early mk2 Skoda Fabias.  Edit: and as recently pointed out to me by a kind customer, also fitted to some later 9N Polos. Please Private Message me your VIN number if you'd like me to check if your car has this type.

6Y2959802  Fitted to later RHD Mk1 Fabia, from around October 2004.

Left Hand Drive cars will use the other part number in each case.

Part numbers as above but with an at the end are also included now, such as found in cars with rear electric windows too.

Note that both of these are driver's side units, the difference in part numbering is due to the orientation/positioning of the motor module on the panels they mount to in each model.

These parts suffer a type of intermittent, progressive failure where they 'sometimes work fine, sometimes don't work at all'.  This is what I can fix for you.

I will test your faulty unit, confirm the problem, repair it to full working order and post it back to you for £59, total (UK addresses only).

You'd post it to me (tracked24 service recommended,  purchase online at royalmail.com)

I would aim to turn it round within 2 days of receipt, and send it back tracked24.

This is the what the part looks like (mirror image of this and PN 6Y1959801 on RHD Polo):

20210830_104835.thumb.jpg.48b8beb01209aa08d34422c3a421f169.jpg

Central locking via remote will still work in the absence of the window module, so you will be able to secure the car as normal while it is away.

Obviously you'll want to ensure that both front windows are fully shut, as in the absence of the driver's side module the passenger side one will not operate.

New units are nearly £200 from VW, and ebay 2nd hand ones with these part numbers tend to go for nearly £100.

I will charge you just £59 including return postage.

Cheers,

Pete

With yesterday's sad news that this forum may not be continuing in an active way soon, I'll put a contact email address here: movingglass@outlook.com.

If anyone is being put off the idea of using this service due to the 'downtime' or inconvenience of having to visit the car twice, once to remove the module, once a few days later to refit the repaired original, I may be able to offer a slightly different arrangement.

An exchange system where part of the price is refundable on receipt of your original.

You let me know you need a replacement/repair job, either by posting in this thread or private message. If I have a repaired and fully functional unit suitable for your car I'll let you know. The initial price will be higher than for a repair, but there will be a proportion of the price that will be refundable once I receive your original, non-working motor module in return. It will have to be that exact module (the original your car was built with), so I know which car it suits.

So you pay up front, receive a working motor module in the post from me a couple of days later, swap that into your car and send me the original in the post.  This way you can get in behind the door-card just the once, to remove original and fit replacement.

£119 for this variant, with £60 of that as a refund to be returned to you once I have your original in hand. So final cost to you will be £59 plus your postage cost for the return. I think the added convenience of this for you, my customer, may be attractive?

Some part numbering info that I have recently, I think, understood.

There is much more info on this label than just in the 9-digit VW group part number at the top of the label. The key thing to note about that 6Yx95980x number is that on passenger side modules, the 3rd and 9th digit are always different, on driver's side modules they are always the same.

Suffix A after the 9th digit indicates a module made for a car with all four windows electric

Example.jpg.fdaf4c2eb677d7ed887b6ace0b56e633.jpg

With reference to this photo, and the colour coding I've added to the bottom line, here is my best understanding so far of what this info means, and most or all of the variants you may see.

The green box identifies the brand the module was made/programmed for.

Always either SK for Skoda, or VW for Volkswagen.

The three-numeral section underlined in orange is model identification.

240 for VW Polo and Skoda Fabia Mk1;

250 for Skoda Fabia Mk2,

258 for Skoda Roomster, and

750 for VW Transporter.

The two letters underlined in blue are always either DD or PD. As far as I can see this always means Driver's Door and Passenger Door respectively. There may be a numeral 2 or 4 in between these two letters, I think 2 meaning a two-door car and 4 meaning 4-door, but the latter is often omitted (treated as the default?). Not sure on this numeral meaning, I would welcome any confirmation or counter-examples.

The last two characters underlined in red (RS or LS)  indicate whether the module was made for a Right-Hand Drive car or Left-Hand Drive. "Right Steering" or "Left Steering"

Hope this proves useful, comments welcome.

Cheers,

Pete

I'm contemplating broadening this service to include the subsequent generation of motor modules, with part numbers 6Q1959801F/G/H/J or 6Q2959802F/G/H/J.  (Driver's side in each case, for RHD or LHD Polos respectively).  It looks like H superseded F, and J superseded G. These were fitted to cars built from late 2007 onwards for a year or two, I understand.

I've only just has a look at one for the first time, and although quite different in packaging, it has commonality circuit-wise and a couple of other features that might cause trouble in later life.

On the same no fix no fee basis as the previous offerings, anyone have one that they are having trouble with?

Send me a message to discuss, please.

You'd post it to me (less than 1Kg so can be sent as a first class small parcel for just £3.68 within UK at present).  I would aim to turn it round within 2 days of receipt, and send it back first class.

Having paid £159.00 to an 'Automotive Electrical Specialist' garage who totally failed to rectify the fault, I searched the internet and found Pete. As Abingdon is only 18 miles from me I drove over to see Pete. He replaced my assembly with one of his stock units (and gave me a cup of tea) and it has now been working perfectly for 3 weeks. Petes is not only a magician with Polo window assemblies but he is a very nice helpful bloke. Thanks Pete.

Some updates.

1. If you're not sure what the part number of your Polo's window motor is, and don't want to have to take off the door card to look, I can figure it out from your VIN, if you send that to me in a Private Message.

2. The Mk2 Fabia motor module I was hoping to acquire for my exchange stock never materialised so that's still a gap in my inventory, if anyone has one in non-working condition I'd be glad of it. A RHD one will have part number 6Y1959801 (like a Polo) but bottom line of part number label will be SK250DDRS, rather than VW240...

3. For anyone wanting to check the relevant fuses on their (RHD) Polo, this photo may be useful. Drivers side module fuses ringed in pale green (#18 and #31) , passenger side in yellow (#39). The 25 amp standard blade fuses are on permanent 12V supply.

Fuse 18, the mini-blade 5 Amp one is an ignition switched 12V.

I would highly recommend the service which Pete provides. It took me over 3 years to find a solution which was not buying a new unit from VW/Skoda. I had numerous attempts to fix the issue and finally came across Pete on this forum. My wife was on the verge of wanting an alternative car as without opening windows the car was not easy use (parking barriers/tickets etc) and as new driver she did not feel confident with this situation.

The unit arrived very quickly, he was also very helpful in guiding me through another issue which I had. Worth noting , the car was not a polo it was Skoda Fabia Mk1, he is very knowledgable on both vehicles and an incredibly helpful person.

Thanks Pete 😀👏

Exchange stock finally now includes Skoda Fabia mk2 version of 6Y1959801.

Interestingly, testing in my 9N3 demonstrates that this and the Skoda Roomster version of 6Y1959801 are not functionally equivalent to the VW versions, up/down movements of switches result in opposite-direction glass motion, and one-touch operation seems to be affected in that on the way up (switch down!), both of those don't fully close the window, stopping 40 or 50mm shy.

Price of exchange unit dropping to £75 for remainder of August, with same £30 rebate on receipt of returned original motor module.

Watch out for postal strikes on 26th and 31st Aug, 8th and 9th Sept.

Hi Pete

I am new to this forum and would like to send my drivers side window motor to you for the PCB repair please ( both windows now permanently stopped working after intermittent failure).

Please let me know what I need to do.

Thanks

Deryl

Hi Pete

I have a 2007 1.2 s with a front passenger window issue , basically it’s stopped working , (drivers side works fine ),  got power to it took door card on and off a few times got it working again off the nsf switch not the drivers side only for it to stop again after replacing door card took it off again unplugged motor plugged in again working again til door cards back on . After reading a lot about the pcb relays capacitors etc do you think the issue is likely to be with that motors control unit or maybe the drivers side one . If so do you offer a repair service for passenger units

thanks Jon

Hi Jon, I think your symptoms point to a wire broken in one or other of the front door bellows, rather than a module fault. More details to follow.

Have you looked at the wiring between A-pillar and front door on either side?

There's one particular thin wire that goes only from driver's to passenger side window module that I suspect may be busted.

Edit, 10am: The wire is purple/white.  Probably easiest to assume there's a break within the driver's door bellows as that's almost always the most used door, so the most likely point for wear and tear.

Hi Pete

Yes I initially peeled the bellows away as I’ve had fractured wires before , even within a loom ( o2 sensor heater circuit ) but nothing obvious, today I tried another unit (  supposedly working fine ) same results.

This was before I saw your reply , so after reading that went at it again , this time I pulled both bellows well back still nothing showing at the top towards the A post plugs ..,rather than undo the looms further down the bellows I did a continuity test from one plug to the other with both door cards off ( as you said the purple/ white ran from one module to the other ) Result no continuity, as you suspected . So next just to confirm that I ran a fresh wire from one plug purple connection to the other plug connection .
Result …,working windows 👍 confirming indeed a break somewhere . Next up continuity test from plug to wire just before it enters A post plug on both sides . Result continuity…,Running out of daylight at this stage so called it s day for today, but hey at least I’ve narrowed it down to a break in between both A posts , I’m suspecting the Drivers A post connection may be dodgy there was evidence around there of previous mauling with some old Alarm harness . I’m gonna resume tomorrow see if I can find it , if not I’ll run a fresh wire between the confirmed good bits ,

.Right then bud massive thanks for putting me in the right direction with that purple white wire , it was starting to drive me nuts not making any progress , ill

hopefully find the break keep you posted .Excellent advice and tips again 👍
