Hi can anyone help I’m a new driver bought an 04 polo 1.2 a month ago has been working fine. Then today had drove it lightly for 10 mins then dropped something off and when I went to start it it started but was cutting out. So I gave it some revs and when I drive it was giving me no power then suddenly power like the car was jumping then when I come to use the brake I can’t it’s like it’s stuck I can’t press it down. So I put the handbrake on and switched the car off as I got out the light sound was stuck on but the car lights and the engine was switched off and the left front and back light is stuck on.

Centralise the indicator stalk and this will go away.

 

For the other problem(s) check the brake servo vacuum hose that runs across the back of the engine bay, I imagine you may find it cracked and leaking badly, if not completely parted. Here's a photo of one that's about to let go:

 

Thank you very much sir this was the problem one side is split I gorilla taped it to get the car home but now I guess I need to buy a new part. Don’t want the brakes to fail on me while I’m driving. 

Any idea what part of that pipe is called  I need please? It’s the one running to the engine  

You should find a part number printed on the hard plastic part of the pipe in a repeating sequence.  Possibly easiest to see to the left of the photo you have shown there.

6Q2612041 plus a couple of letters. the letters are crucial in getting the right replacement.

 

That's for the whole assembly from brake servo to engine, you won't find the pipe section just from engine to one-way valve available as a spare part from VW.

So can I remove this pipe as I’m parked on a little bank but with my handbrake on ? Sorry I know nothing about cars haha and I will need the full pipe right ? 

Do you mean remove it in order to see the part number? 

Don't worry too much about that, a VW dealership parts counter will be able to look up the right part number from your reg plate number, and realistically, you won't be able to get a new one anywhere else.

 

Your tape repair should be fine for the day or two you may have to wait for the replacement; just check that there isn't another, similar split the other side of that one-way valve, and tape it up thoroughly if there is.

 

 

Other side was splitting too mate is that better gorilla tape then insulating tape

The only other place they sometimes split is right next to the brake servo, at the point it joins the right-angle fitting that goes into the servo (big black round thing).  Less likely there in my experience but worth a quick fingertip feel and visual look.

 

That's your rear screenwash feed that had popped apart, you may find it now works (although there are other joints that may also have popped.

39 quid for the part and I will have to wait until they ordered it for Tuesday do you think car will be fine to drive until then or not mate?

That tape repair should hold fine for a few days, I normally carry a roll of this https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/adhesives/halfords-self-amalgamating-tape-19mmx5m-187719.html for any temporary pipe fixes it self seals onto itself and is ideal for vacuum pipes repairs like yours

Thanks mate I used it tonight just slowly I have only been driving a month and when the brake failed earlier it’s put me back 3 weeks haha

So I get this hose today lads. Is it an easy fit. Just pop it on where the old one was? Gonna be attempting to change it later today. 

Press the brake pedal a few times with engine off to deplete any residual vacuum in the servo, otherwise that end fitting will try to pull itself back in as you pull it out. Moisten the new one with a bit of spit to help it go in.

The hose clip at the manifold end may be awkward to remove due to access and the type of clip. What has the new one got at that end, if anything?

New one just looks like it's a push fit, no clip required. 

Old one not sure what the easiest way is, some you can pick open with a flat screwdriver if you can get enough access.

side cutters and destroy it is another way if you've got some strong sharp ones.

If you struggle, take it to the nearest garage and slip them a fiver to undo it for you.

 

I got it off thanks mate with a screwdriver and a bit wiggling the new one clipped in and seems fine I drove it home.
