sounds like the one ...you load up vcds onto your laptop and connect with the cable , you should then have a basic code reader where you can view live data like tps and o2 signal etc

 

sometimes theyre a bit sketchy getting em to work

 

Can i use the ebay item above with an OBD2 scanner? It looks to have the plug. My manager has an OBD2 scanner you see.

 

I'd rather not use VCDS/laptop if i can avoid it, at least one site (Rosstech) charges you for the license.

you can get free downloads of vcds lite 

 

as for will it work with scanners ...try it , you need the 2+2 style adaptor , mine has worked on a ebay £25 scanner and a snap on one , some people cant get theirs to work at all

yeah that cable and it may well work if you have a selection of scanners to try

Yes, the timing is trimmed in order to keep the idle speed steady, does the job of an ISV. However i've been advised that a timing mark that is jumping through 5-10deg like mine is probably doing so because of a fault, so i can't blame it on scattersparking.

 

Ignition Car Parts have stock of new distributors at reasonable prices, and they tell me they are manufactured in-house not sourced from China. I don't think i can avoid replacing the distributor in this situation, it has to be ruled out.

 

I've been lent an Elm327 v.1.2a, which via an adapter lead will connect to the digifant. I have to install the software on my laptop and see what happens, this is currently the cheapest way to interrogate the ECU. Start cheap and get more expensive if it doesn't work.

watch out buying distributors , many will list them as fitting a 3f but they dont work right , id get a used genuine one off a 6n mpi , part engind AB is suitable

 

timing shouldnt move alot...although its checked with blue temp undone and at 2500 revs iirc

the reason i got an aftermarket ecu was that the timing went all over the place when warm , replaced everything on the engine /loom and never fixed it

I think it may be worth rewiring the dizzy back to the ECU in screened 1-triple with the drain/shielding grounded at both ends. I've got an untested theory that the Digifant may have some kind of interference suppression built in that breaks down over time, as semiconductor material tends to do. Why this problem is temperature related is still a mystery to me, but it's definitely worse around 80-90deg.

Well, it's passed its test and I've retired the Porsche, they tested it as a non cat vehicle for some reason. The exhaust fell off the other day because the hooks on the car body over the backbox are bent and snapped. My fix piece was a bit sharp and severed the rubber. Is there a known way to address this?

The niggles are coming to the fore now. When you boot it hard in first gear the exhaust rattles on the car body, only in first gear. I'd guess that the engine mounts are unable to take the counterforce due to having gone soggy, anyone familiar with this issue?

 

Can anyone recommend a good set of engine mounts?

 

Edit- There's another thread on here where someone says Mk2 G60 gearbox mount is a direct swap, is he right?

mine rattles on that brace underneath....id put it down to a badly fitting pattern exhaust more than worn engine mounts

It's got a pattern exhaust on it. What aftermarket systems fit well? I'd be after a cat back 304SS, and i think i'd just make up a sleeve to bypass the cat and refit for MOT.

 

I'm going to order a G60 gearbox mount anyway, it feels to have gained about 10bhp with the porting and valve work so the counterforce will be outside of manufacturer's estimations, plus we all know what happens to rubber over time.

Got around to doing the G60 back engine mount swap today, it's not as straight forward as it looks. The mountings are physically the same size and length, but the big washer has to come off the bracket side. I sawed the tabs off to free it and reduced its diameter by centering a 44mm holesaw in the M10 hole. I could have done away with the tabs completely and fitted a thick penny washer, but i thought the original part may have been designed how it was for a reason, so kept the tab locking feature. Plenty of chassis wax in between all the parts to finish it off. You have to use an M10x30 bolt to secure the mount bracket, i went for A4 and threadlocked it.

 

See if it stops my rattle problems

It's a good upgrade, i can tell it's stiffer by the extra vibration through the floorpan. The exhaust still rattles a bit under full gas in first though, that'll be the cheap pattern system.
