Hi, My 2002 Polo 1.2 has signs of rust on the inside of the roof. There are little specks of brown on the felt but I can't feel any damp anywhere. Does anyone know if these could be the first signs of corrosion on the roof? I'm attaching a photo. There is no rust anywhere on the body and it sails thru its mot every year. I want to keep it going as long as I can but unfortunately not able to garage.

Hi Sue, it doesn't seem very likely to be rust to me. 

Have you carried any  bulky items in the car recently, or children wielding chocolate? 

Whereabouts on the roof liner are we looking?

see alot of headlinings with brown specs on , assume its years of dirt /stuff /damp, as they typicly never get cleaned

 

of all the things to worry about on your polo a rusty roof isnt up there on the list , they dont suffer with it 

Thanks for the replies. The rusty marks are above the interior light and spreading further into the middle. I've tried cleaning them off and they don't won't budge.

2002 is pretty close to a crossover year between the versions of Polo. I'm guessing it's the newer shape with 4 round headlights, rather than the older one with a pair of square headlights?

 

That's a bit of a weird one if it were rust, it looks more like some sort of dirt. 

 

The interior light does pop out fairly easily if you wanted to have a look behind it for signs of rust. Have a look on youtube and there'll be a guide. 

 

 

As it has a moulded headliner I doubt it is rust water staining ?

Thanks for your help. Yeah it's the model with 4 rounded headlights. It's only just showing signs of deterioration, eg the headlight cover on the offside is starting to look scratched and faded. 

In conclusion I think  it's the material itself which is deteriorating.
