Front wipers stopped …not a fuse??

Featured Replies

Strange fault on my daughters 2010 Polo Tdi. The front wipers have stopped working. Fuses (2 & 47?) seem ok but the weird thing is when

you pull the stalk towards you to wash the screen the rear wiper works but nothing else. Push forward the rear wiper works as expected.

Any ideas. Relay? Earth Faulty? Just to double check which fuses are should I be checking.

hi did you get this issue solved? doesn’t seem to be many  responses to these problems

@hog are you having front wiper problems? What year is your Polo?

Hi yes the front wipers do not work when the stalk is operated in any position. The washer activation works but no motion of the wipers. Rear work fine. Currently wipers have been bypassed to a toggle switch for operation. Have ordered a new stalk as there are no known relays on this model polo 2007 1.2 petrol 9N

The relay is within the onboard supply control unit; soldered in.

Whereabouts are you?

Some pertinent info here.

Best to eyeball the relay type to confirm identity before ordering, if you do fancy a go at replacement.

Where shouts bcoz I spoke to Vw and they have said no relay associated with the wipers I’m in Preston lancashire

See link in my last post for pics of the unit it's soldered into.

I could repair by post possibly if you can be without the car for a few days?

Is it still worth trying the new stalk first , as I have now received it?

like I said the only thing affected is the wipers nothing else

If you can fit it yourself with no labour cost, maybe.

If not, I doubt it.

All that relay controls is the wipers.

Pete is that the relay that always burns out in the unit under the dash ?

I wouldn't say always, but I've heard of several doing so, yeah.

As it says in that linked guide, it's the intermittent mode that does for them.

In normal mode the relay just switches on and stays on until you switch off the wipers, but in intermittent mode, it clicks on at the start of every back-and-forth sweep, and off at the end of each one, so increases the wear rate on the contacts in the relay enormously.

You could test that the stalk is giving the correct info to the control unit if you have a multimeter.

As far as I can see, Pin 7 (white/green wire) should go to 12V relative to a chassis earth when the stalk is put in continuous slow speed position, and pin 8 (green/yellow wire) when fast wiper action is selected. Ignition needs to be on for this test.

This is the relevant connector on the control unit for these inputs, you can probably shove test probes up the wire entries with the connectors still in place and make contact.

I think that may be the nearest/most accessible connector when you look up under the dash, above acc pedal.

hi pete1, fitted new stalk, so the current operation is as follows:

no wiper motion on position 1 intermittent

no wiper motion on position 2

wiper operation on position 3

washer operates but no wiper motion.

to bring the wipers to a rest one has to drop the stalk from pos 3 down one when the wiper blades hit the base of the windscreen otherwise they stop across the screen,

so from no movements previously  we currently have some movement  from the new stalk on position 3 which is faster than the override toggle i had as a temp measure.

any more ideas please? could it be the wiper motor , just trying to eliminate the smaller items first

thanks

hog

Which colour wire does your toggle switch circuit put power onto, the white/black one? And where does that power come from?

It's a bit confusing cos of the way the (dual) relay is wired. The way I see it, the fast speed (position 3)  shouldn't work if power isn't getting through the relay contacts that do the standard speed (position 2). I don't understand why yours has started working on position 3, with no other change than the stalk. Maybe check the stalk signals are getting to the BCM as suggested above.

hi pete1, electrics not my strong point but will try and get the answers, to be clear my vehicle is a vw polo 2007 9N . the reference you make is for a skoda , are they the same wiring bcm principle , wiring colours etc.?

The how-to thread for relay replacement, do you mean?

Yes, same control units fitted to 9N/9N3 Polo as in Mk1 & early mk2 Skoda Fabia (and Seat Ibiza). They're the same car with different body panels bolted on really.

Wire colours may vary between brands though.

White/Black is the wire colour on your Polo to make wiper motor go at normal speed. If you link it to the red/yellow next to it on the control unit connector the wiper should run at normal speed til you remove link again.

Who fitted the toggle switch, yourself?

No the toggle was fitted by a mechanic to help us get back on the road. I will ask the question about the wiring set up but from memory I think it’s wired from the battery to the wiper motor .to the toggle switch

Hello, I'm in the same situation, but my washer doesn't work either. I can only activate the rear wiper. I checked that the motor works, no fuse is blown, and I checked the wiper switches on the steering wheel. Once I remove the BCM, which relay do I have to change?

I have a polo mk4 9n3 2009.

Thank you very much in advance.

Have you checked fuse 16, a 10 Amp rated one? In sister model mk1 Skoda Fabia this is a common cause of

washers and wipers not working together.

Relay is this one I think if your BCM has part number ending in F, but is not involved in the washers:
