I replaced the speedo cable a while ago as it occasionally wasn't working. For a while it was fine but now it 'sticks' at zero again. I'm guessing the cable and drive are fine since the mileage is still going up. 

 

So presumably something is wrong in the instrument itself. Is it worth a dab of wd40 around the pointer or something or is there a special trick?

 

I've had the instrument cluster out plenty of times before but if I'm going to actually dismantle the thing I thought it would be worth seeking advice so it's not a wasted effort and I don't damage the parts. 

Plastic end gear probably loose or cracked. A metal cog drives the mile display.

Plastic the speed.

 

VDO or Motometer?

 

 

VDO, it's very basic as doesn't even have the trip counter. Sounds like it could be the plastic gear, guess I better take it apart at some point. Need to see if it makes it though the MOT first. Technically it should be working for MOT I think but I don't think it can actually be failed unless it's obviously damaged or they take the car on the road.

 

I'm a bit paranoid about damaging the circuits on the instrument binnacle or the speedo itself but I'll suck it up and figure it out if I have to. I can always use my phone as a speedo for a bit. 

Well it would appear the speedo came back to life before the MOT, which is handy, not that it was likely to be failed on it. Gives me a bit more time to look into it though.
