Short question: will a Polo 6N1 AEF (1.9D) fit in a Golf Mk1 diesel?

 

Long:

I've done some research and in the Polo the engine is tilted forward, so a taller 1.9TDI AHU or 1.6D will need many mods to fit in a Polo.

 

But the opposite, fitting the AEF in a Mk1 Golf, would that encounter any difficulties? I've found;

- the turbo'd version of the AEF (AAZ) is a drop in replacement (same engine mounts as 1.6D)

- a swap to a T3 camper with 1.6CS has been done (https://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/1-6cs-to-aef-engine-swap_topic52595.html) and looks fairly simple (only oil stick needs mod)

 

So from what I see it will be an easy swap, or am I missing something?

Fyi; I'll re-use the 1.6D 020 gearbox 190mm clutch plate (might upgrade it to 200mm, 210mm, only looking to make decent power 80-100hp)

Here's the FAQ item for putting the petrol 1.6 AEE in mk2 Polo that might help.

I assume the AEE and AEF blocks are similar.

 

There's more space in the MK1 Golf engine bay than a Polo so should be okay. I still suspect some engine mount fabrication will be required, diesels vibrate more.

 

Is the 020 box cable change? That might need some linkage supports and new cable ends whose alignment is critical to selecting all gears.

Very cool, I ran through the parts that fits this engine and it looks like the left , right and front engine mounts are the same on all engines (AAZ, AEF, AAE and even AHU). The Golf Mk3 came with the AEE so sounds logical it would.

 

Only the rear one (closest to firewall) is special, but looks like that's for the transmission since its different on the Polo. Yeah the 020 has a cable, I'll figure that one out 😃 it got an adjustment screw and everything so should be easy to setup. Thanks!!
