6n shifter mechanism retrofit

Hello everyone, this might seem a weird question but I have a 96" polo 6n (aee) and the shifter is in a bad state its lose the sometimes I cant shift into gears, it has the old style shifter mechanism 94-96 (6n0711023-f - part number), was wondering if i could retrofit the newer style shifter from 97-99 (6n0711265 - part number) found one in a junkyard it fits in the frame but I don't know if it wont work with the current transmission, if the cables would fit without issues or if I could use the current cables on the new shifter. I attached some pictures of the two shifters (the one without the knob is the newer one).
