AWY to BBM swapped Polo 9n and it's mystery

Featured Replies

Hello to all! I'm new to this forum and really glad to say "Hello". There is a question to all of you who could provide me an answer.

I have my own Polo 9n 2004 3door with originally AWY engine. I know that previous owner swapped the AWY engine to BBM. I can see in the tec docs that BBM is almost the same as AWY but has +6 more horsepowers. I'm not sure if the previous owner changed the VDO's firmware from AWY to BBM type (neither I know if this firmwares are different or no). My thoughts are: if there is a difference in HP between AWY and BBM, so that they could probably are driven by different VDO firmware. If my VDO "thinks" that that there is still AWY installed, so there is a probable constant lack of smth (air, gas) so that I have my week engine to be even underpowered now.

I would be glad for your comments.

Can you add a photo of the engine ECU or tell us the part number(s) on the label.  That should identify whether it was just the physical engine, or also the wiring loom and ECU that was brought in from the BBM car.

Part number and date code 25.07.03 both confirm that's the original unit. BBM engine not fitted to Polo until 2007 I believe.

Could you please tell if I need to change the ECU part or it's possible to change the firmware. Also I'd appreciate to know if it's really nessesary to have ECU from BBM (or firmware of BBM) due to the fact that my engine is OK (somehow).

I don't know, is the short answer.

There are wiring differences from ECU plug to engine, so if you did change ECU, you would at least need the engine loom, maybe also the engine bay loom. Not sure.

If the engine/ECU combination that you currently have is not generating any fault lights or fault codes, I would say that there is not a problem with the air/fuel mixture.

I’m just wondering if ECU from AWY (54hp) controls BBM engine (60hp) so the ECU+engine combination gives me 54hp or 60hp?

54 I would think. 🙁
