Polo 6n1 hickup on acceleration in lower rpm

Hi all,

bought a 6n1 1.4 from 1997 after 21 years since my first 6n1 but notice a violent hickup when accelerating (full throttle) when i am in lower rpm. Its like an engine cutout for 1 second.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to what may cause this issue?

i must add that the temp gauge is not working but do not see a connection with the above.

also first gear is difficult to find sometimes, is there an adjustment on the selector or does the bushing need replacing?
