I came across a VW ad from the 1980s some time back. 

It claimed that 300 litres of wax were injected into the Polo during assembly.

This quantity of wax would weigh about 288 kg!

Surely this must be an error, but it is there in black & white in the ad.

I know that this was an era when VW did a lot to prevent their cars rusting, but adding nearly one third of a tonne to the weight of a Polo would be ludicrous.

Other than a typo, the only other explanation would be that 300 litres was injected, of which most was drained out to use in the next car on the assembly line!

What do you think - the ad is attached, but I am not sure that you will be able to read the text.

Am I missing something?

 

It does say 'niche seeking'.

 

Yes it flows out hot, but some stays in the seams, niches and hollows that would otherwise be moisture traps leading to rust.

 

You used to see Mk2 Golfs in hot summer with wax trails down the boot oozing from below the trim.

 

I'm working on replacing a rusty half floor and I have set light to the sill wax with the welding torch on a few occasions. 

There's no wick so it is not quite a Polo candle and will blow out. Inside I'll be using Epoxymastic or POR-15 where I can reach and reinject Dinitrol or Waxoyl or BiltHamber Dynax S50 where I can't, once I'm done welding. And underseal obviously.

I still cannot believe the volume of 300 litres. That’s almost a third of a cubic metre!

Good luck with your welding. You are clearly far more hands-on than I am.

Bet it was lowered into a 300 litre tank and tilted around leaving under 300 grams.

 

Wax might explain why there's a hole about size of a 50p coin in the floorpan near the rear bench. Though it's quite handy for lifting the new floor piece in and out. 

 

I reckon a grommet N10226501 32mm will do it.

Keep forgetting to measure.

 

Wish they'd put more wax around the seat mount and bottom of the doors.
