My aunt recentky passed away and I am a 17 year old learner driver and I have been offered her car.

It is a 2010 Polo with 50,000 miles on the clock. It has MOT until July.

I have a couple of questions:

a) They don't want to take any money for it, so, I would like to either donate it to charity or put the money in a Junior ISA for her new-born Grandson, so how much do you think would be a fair amount of money?

b) Are there any common issues I should look out for on these types of polos with this kind of mileage.

Sorry to hear of your loss there.

The cars as a whole are well made, and do last well. If it's a 1.4 petrol like the one in the link, the engines are generally reliable.

You can sometimes get unlucky and have rust on the arches and sills.

The main problems they suffer are normally from either neglect or how they've been driven. Make sure the biting point of the clutch isn't high, check the brakes and tyres, and and body or interior damage (the armrest always falls apart, but you can get copy ones cheap).

Realistically, it's a 15 year old car, so the price depends on condition. If it's rough, I'd be down at about £750, up to £2000 for a good one.

It might sound a bit obvious to say it, but as a new driver, do an insurance quote before you commit, as that can be the biggest factor

Did you get my post about trying to find the best way to insure my Polo Mk2F coupe please ?

I am just 17 and learning to drive, Dad has registered my car to get it bought and back home,

He has used Adrian Flux for ever and asked me to pop into the Salisbury branch to explore options,

I have passed my Theory test and am already looking to book my test so hopefully will not be learning too long, Not sure wither to go on dads policy or get my own, we can get the car registered in my name anytime !

Any advice would be welcomed please.
