National Geographic - Car S.O.S - Volkswagen Polo G40 Restoration

Tim and Fuzz restore a 1991 VW Polo G40. While Fuzz restores its mechanical heart, Tim’s off to Germany to find out why VW made a supercharged Polo.

Just watched the latest episode of Car S.O.S on National Geographic and had to come share—this one's for the real VW fans. Season 13, Episode 8 features a full-blown resurrection of a 1991 VW Polo G40, and it’s easily one of the most satisfying episodes they’ve done.

The car had been off the road for years after failing its MOT, and life got in the way for the owner, who clearly had a deep emotional connection to it. It’s the kind of story we all know too well—how a much-loved project can sit idle for far too long.

Fuzz dives into the mechanical side, tackling that legendary G-Lader supercharger, rebuilding the tired engine, and bringing the little Polo back to its former glory. Meanwhile, Tim heads off to Germany to uncover the history behind VW’s decision to build a supercharged pocket rocket in the first place. It’s rare to see the G40 get this much screen time or respect, and they really did it justice.

That said, I have to admit I wasn’t overly impressed with the presenters this time around. There was a lot of filler and not enough focus on the actual work done to the car. It felt like the episode leaned more into feel-good fluff and repeated scenes than really diving into the challenges of restoring a G40—which, let’s face it, isn’t a walk in the park. I would’ve loved more detailed coverage of the mechanical process, especially around the rebuild and the finer restoration decisions. For a car this special, it deserved a bit more depth and less banter.

Curious if anyone else here saw it? What did you think of the restoration work, especially on the G-Lader? Personally, I loved how true they stayed to the car’s roots and kept things original.

At the end, it was mentioned that 700 hours went into the restoration. They hinted the engine might need work. Also there was corrosion mentioned on it's 2007 MOT, which could have been pipe of doom. So an awful lot of work went into it.

Just watched it good to see one more saved. R.i.p

It was an interesting episode but like 99% of the CarSOS episodes it was ruined by that W⚓️ Tim pratting about, more should be on the actual repairs done by Fuzz and the other team members, the same goes for Wheeler Dealers episodes show more of the actual repair work and less of Mike.

I only hope Anthony had great pleasure of driving the G40 before his untimely demise, may he RIP knowing that he drove the car again

Have you seen the episode where he gets Fuzz with a set of double air horns? All will be forgiven.
