Hello, i want to add and i did add courtesy lights to my 2006 Polo 9n3, but i dont feel confident enough that it wont break something up so today i removed it. I followed this video of i guy adding those courtesy lights on his Polo https://youtu.be/Z3bb-LCJSZY?si=4VRehYZwmzftv-Ew . I wanna know is there a better way to add them?

I forgot to add that the driver side door switch when it was "off" the power was cut from 12v to 2v, it wasnt cut to 0v. And also for the passenger door, when switch was "off" the power was cut from 12v to 9v. I dont know, i assumed wiring it to the switch would be either on or off, not as is "off" but not complitely "off". Inspecting the PCB inside the door lock i found that pin 3, 7, 8 are in contact with the microswitch that determines if door is opened or closed. Pin 7, 8 are ocupied and pin 3 is empty, and when measuring with multimeter countinuity from pin 8 to pin 3, 7 i get beep when microswitch is pressed. But when i connect the light to pin 3 and to 12v, it just stays on regardless of microswitch being pressed or not. And if i connect light to pin 7 and to 12v, its always on, just voltage drops from 12v to 9v (or drivers side from 12v to 2v). Sadly it seems its not straight forward as i thought, since every microswitch in the door lock is connected together and they all work together. I dont know why they didnt put the light in from the factory since on mine there is everything except the light and cable inside.. There is a hole, there is a foam around the hole with obvious channels to route the cable..

What year was the car built?

Factory wiring in the 9n appears to use a relay (J560) with permanent feeds (Y6) to both the coil and the NO contact, triggered by central convenience unit pin 3/23 being pulled low.

Thank you for the reply, car is from 2006, restyling model, 9n3. So looking at this, it is aveliable from factory to wire those lights?

Yes. That's the official VW wiring diagram, or part of it. Relay (449 written on top) was fitted in position 5 of the relay panel, and 12V feed 'Y6' came from fuse 28.

Have a look at your relay panel and see if there are any contacts in position 5. I expect there will not be, but look anyway. I expect there is none of the wiring needed, in cars that were not built with the door warning lights.

I just checked and there is indeed a relay in position 5 with 4 contacts (1 - two red/black wires, 2 - red/black wire, 3 - purple/black wire, 4 - empty, 5 - brown wire). There is also an empty slot for another relay in position 5 (it has 2 slots for 2 small relays). And on relay it self there is a number 489. I have read on relay diagram for polo 9n3 that relay in slot 5 is also for the trunk light and my Polo does have trunk light installed (i saw 3 Polo-s 9n3 in junk jard that didnt have trunk light and the wiring for it at all), and the wire for the trunk light is red/black, same as the 3 wires on the relay 489 (position 5). That has me confused, because the relay carrier diagram I'm looking at shows no such 'two thin relays' detail for position 5.

Maybe the door warning light relay is a narrow one, that would fit next to the 489 you do have?

Googling VW relay 449 does indeed suggest it's a narrow one which might fit there.

No wires/contacts in the left half of the slot 5 I guess?

Yeah, i did a quick google search as well and found both 449 and 489, both narrow ones, and i did test fit the 489 relay to that empti slot and indeed it seems like it would fit. No wires and contatcs in the left empty slot of position 5 relay, just the plastic housing.

Looking at the pictures online for both relays, they look the same, even the part numbers give the same vibe. 6Q0 951 253 for the 489 relay, and 1K0 951 253 for the 449 relay

But how would i connect it? Even if i had that relay, where would i pull the trigger wire, power source? It has to be connected somewhere where the door switch is connected, somewhere were it would get signal that door is opened and which door. Also, a power to light up. I saw a connector on a comfort control unit, i belive its marked XS5 (im not sure, i forgot it, its 6 pin connector with only 4 wires and those 4 wires colors are corresponding to the colors of the each door switches that tell the car if door is opened or closed).

Trigger for the relay is shown in the wiring diagram, pin 3 of the 23-way connector on the central convenience control unit (not the unit you described above with XS5 etc.)

But there probably won't be a wire in that position of the 23-way connector. 😥

Could i ask you for wiring diagram, if you have one, for that? Or if you could direct me where i could find one, preferably free version 🤣

I understand, but i dont know how will that relay activate for exsample drivers door light only, or passengers door only, etc..

It has reflectors, like on this picture. Behind this reflector, there i a foam of some sort, that has channel for wire, hole for the wire, that leads to the hole where that reflector is sitting. It was meant to have the light there, but at some point someone decided to throw it away.

I just dont understand the part about that relay, how will it know what door is opened, and where the light will shine? And even if i put and wire up the relay, how will i wire up the light then?

Im sorry if that sounds a litle bit stupid, but i am a noob when it comes to wiring diagrams, and cars in general. Im still trying to learn. I dont know what M27 and M28 is, are those lights? And what would be T21/4 and T21/1, what connector would that be? In the door there is connector on window motor, wing mirror, door lock

Sorry, had a busy day yesterday.

I think the answer is that this module (J393, central convenience) will energise the relay when either door is opened, and because both of the lamps (M27, M28) are wired in parallel to the relay's output, they will both come on whichever door is opened.

The central convenience module is in control of all the door lock motors/central locking functions, and alarm (where fitted), so it either directly or indirectly will know the open/closed state of all the doors at any time. (So that it won't attempt to lock an open door, for example).

You are correct that the 'door open' microswitches on the locks communicate directly with the onboard supply control unit (and the electric window motors) rather than the central convenience control unit, but this information will be shared with all other modules that have any need for the info, via the CAN network.

The 4 wiring connections labelled T21/1 (an earth), T21/4 (a 12V feed) etc. for each lamp, are within the black rectangular 21-way plug/socket pairs at each A-pillar connector set, in the door hinge area both sides. Those wires would need to be added into car and door looms also, if you wanted to do a 'factory' install.

I, personally, really wouldn't bother to try to install this in a car without the wiring in it. Too much work for such a small improvement.

It may be better to use a small local relay on each side (hidden in door somewhere), wired similarly to the factory way, but with permanent feeds taken from the thick 12V connection to the electric window motor, then use the door microswitch (brown/yellow) wire to trigger that relay. You would need to be very careful to make sure that the coil switching spikes did not affect the other connected items though. At the very least this would need a reverse-biased diode across the coil of the relay Flyback diode - Wikipedia.

Try at your own risk.

Thank you so much for the help and clarification @Pete1 , i understand it much better now what i need to do. When it comes to the work, personally its worth to me, small details here and there makes it stand out so i dont mind spending some extra time. One last question, beacuse now that i understand how the lights are connected in the diagram, could it be possible that those lights, in the diagram, are meant to be the "wing mirror lights"?

Beacuse, Polo 9n3 didnt come with wing mirror lights, it just has the turn signal indicators. But, but, it shares same wing mirrors as the Skoda Octavia A5 2004-2008, and the turn signal/wing mirror light on the picture above, are for the Skoda Octavia A5 2004-2008. But, again with the but, Polo 9n3 has a place and the cutouts for that Skoda turn signal/wing mirror light to be installed (i have alredy bought those on the picture and test fited them, but since im still waiting for the pins for the connector to arrive i didnt install them yet, and i was planing to install them with the interior lighting, just to tap in that wiring for the interior lights which would make them turn on when car is unlocked or doors are opened, etc..).

So after all of that talk i just did, my question would be, is that wiring diagram ment for those wing mirror lights? Could it be that its for that? Since that makes sence to be wired in parallel, those wing mirror lights. I dont think some German engineer just wired in parallel door panel lights and called it a job well done. Perhaps, that relay 449, 3/23 signal, is ment for the wing mirror lights?

No. M27 is the warning light in the left front door, M28 in the right one.

@Pete1 If i can ask you for the assistance. First, is a relay with built in diode a good choice? And second thing is, connecting wires.

Connection 2, 3 would be constant 12v from window motor?

Connection 5 would be brown/yellow from the door switch (switched ground)

And connection 1 would be 12v to the light and ground wire of the light to the ground of the door window motor?

And relay would only activate when 12v is applied? Since on passenger door when door is closed voltage is dropped only to 9v.

Yes, that should be suitable, I think.

But no, you want 1 & 3 to be the positive feeds,

2 will go to the brown/yellow microswitch wire, and

5 to the warning light, with the other wire from the warning light to earth (for example the thick brown going to window motor).

Relay will activate when that door is opened.

You will need the same on the other door. Maybe try it off the car first?

I was busy these few days. I menage to find 2 449 relays, they were also cheap and with relay holder for both of them. I wired them up to the door microswitch (brown/yellow for drivers door, brown/grey or white for passenger door). Now im wondering, since relays are from Bosch, and i belive they use resistor instead of a diode, should they be good for those warning lights? On passenger door, before when i connected the light directly to the +12v from window motor power wire and to the brown/grey or white of the door microswitch the light was still shining when door is closed since voltage only droped to 9v, but now with relay there its complitely off, 0v, and the relay isnt triggered. It works prefectly with relay. Im just worried with the flyback voltage or what it is called, i dont know if i measured it correctly, but when relay is energised i measure 12v and when its de energised i see voltage drop to 0 and then for less then a 1s i see smth like 200mv on multimeter and then again 0v.

I would add a diode across the coil, in case the switch-off spike causes damage to other things connected to the wiring you have used.

Line on diode must connect to the positive coil connection.

Use type 1N4007 or similar. Very cheap.

Much easier to use a relay like the one you linked, with built-in diode.
