Would anyone bother with genuine rear wheel bearings? They are available from VW classic parts for the outrageous sum of 106 Euro. A Febi kit is about a tenner from Autodoc. The Heritage Parts full repair kit with drums and cylinders etc. isn't specific about what make the bearings are, so i'm suspicious.

I'm with you on that, Febi/Bilstein probably made the originals anyway.

I'm quite a fan of genuine components, but not at this price. I'll go for the Febi kit that comes with the oil seal and the nut locker.

I've washed out my old worn out bearings with white spirit and refitted them with molybdenum grease; this has stopped the rumble. They aren't the same on the os/ns, though, and the ns has different branded bearings fitted on the inner to the outer!

I've ordered a pair of genuine drums from VW classic parts as they are still available...at a cost. The material will be far superior and probably thicker in key areas, it's money well spent IMO.

I've got to admit, I've quite often changed the outers but not the inners on the older polos. It always seemed that the outer would wear out long before the inner ever did, so I used to do the outer, see if that fixed the issue, and if not, then do the inner.

Got an MOT advisory of wheel bearing has slight play nearside rear, so I'll try that, ta.

Don't use lithium grease, make sure its molybdenum- the dark grey stuff.

Think there's some grease in a tomato-sauce like sachet in the box. Though maybe that's the CV joint rubber kit. Same stuff hopefully.

CV grease will be moly. Higher melting point, greater solid content and better under load.

I wouldn't go as far as dont use it, its a better vs best thing. I doubt VW even used anything as good as lithium grease in them

You'll probably get away with slacking the nut off and retightening it. The ones on my saloon looked like they hadn't even been tightened when they were fitted when I checked them (after about 6 months of owning it). I retightened them outside the mot place and 10k later, they're still fjne

Sometimes the tester has done that for me.

Always the same nearside corner. Can't understand how it works loose, as though the split pin and crown is just there for reassuring decoration.

I've always put bearing loosening down to stretch in the stub axel.

They've arrived, and they aren't new old 80s/90s stock like i was hoping, the casting marks are different, but they look to have been machined well. They are later parts and i'm suspicious about the quality of the steel used.

On balance, i think Febi would be better value.
