Help, anyone ?

I'm trying to change the heater matrix in my 6N1. I've pulled enough of the dash out to remove the heater air distribution housing. The manual says remove the 4 bolts from the bulkhead that are holding it in, but I can only find 3. I've searched and searched, removed bolts that are nothing to do with it, but still cant find the elusive 4th bolt. When trying to pull it out, it feels like there is a 4th bolt somewhere, but I just cannot find it. It's not inside the passenger side wheel arch is it ? If not, can someone please tell me where to find this elusive 4th bolt ?

Where were the 3 that you found ?

On the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay. Two, one above the other in the middle and one over to the right as you look under the bonnet.

The one I cant find is over to the right somewhere. The other side of the heater air distributor, adjacent to the two bolts in the middle, is coming away from the bulkhead. The bolt I cant find is obviously over to the right, as that side is still held in.

I've searched everywhere except inside the passenger side wheel arch. But as the manual specifically says four bolts, I would have thought they would have said if it was in the wheel arch, if it was ?

Well, the good old Haynes manual wasnt quite correct. There werent 4 bolts holding the hot air distributor in.

After a chat with a mechanic at the local, formally VW franchise garage, he suggested taking out the pollen filter housing, as it was likely protruding down into the top of the fan housing. I took out the pollen filter housing and reached down into the top of the fan, gave it a push and it all came free.

So there were only 3 bolts and the rest was being held in by the pollen filter case protruding into the top of fan housing.

Also, the Haynes said that once the hot air distributor was out, you had to start splitting it in half to get the heater matrix out. Whilst looking at the top of the matrix, I noticed a clip in each side. I eased them back and lifted the old matrix out. Cleaned up the inside and hoovered out the old bits of foam, then just slid the new one into place, till the clips locked on.

Now just the ball ache of refitting the dash and all the associated stuff.

Before taking the time to open up a new topic, I thought I'd ask this question here.

What controls the heat that goes to the heater matrix ? ? ? or rather, the heat of the air that gets blown through it ?

Prior to having to replace the leaking heater matrix, I'd been putting up with a lukewarm heater, thinking that it was clogged.

So after replacing it, I thought I'd be in for a nice hot heater. But no. It's just the same. Lukewarm.

Could there be something in the thermostat housing that's partially blanking the pipe off ?

The heat control cable has full movement of operation and seems to be moving something at the other end. But how does it regulate the heat ?

I guess the first port of call is to check the water flow into the matrix. It does seem slow for the pipe to get hot. The water pump is new, so flow will be alright.

So it should get hot as the head heats up after starting.

Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd locate the hot water valve and see if the cable is properly connected. It regulates heat by regulating the flow of hot water. After that, the functionality of the valve itself needs looking into.
