Mk2 86c 1.3 swap: what engine?

Featured Replies

I will not spend money to power up my 1.05 so I will like a 1.3 swap. I am wondering what engine, in the carburated range, I will have to find

This https://ebay.us/m/ny9g6Y seems to be a good candidate, but is there a preferred engine on the CV side?

All about the same level of difficulty. Mechanically and electrically. Don't underestimate how hard it is to safely remove an engine, undo driveshaft spline bolts or lift a gearbox back onto the bloc

Shame the distributor hall sender socket is damaged. I may be mistaken but the block oil breather pod and cam cover breather look like they are full of mayonnaise, which would indicate a head gasket

They are all quite tunable with bike carbs.

The 1.3 HK in that ad has 55ps (CV ?)

GK has higher compression, bigger inlet manifold, slightly bigger carb, wider exhaust, longer cam and electronic ignition to get 75ps as standard.

ABD is a 1.4 that fits for some more oomph.

Thanks for your reply. I may I ask which is the easiest swap? A slip on could be the best.

Bike carbs could be great only if there is a complete kit, if not it could be a nightmare for me. Lack of professionals here

All about the same level of difficulty.

Mechanically and electrically.

Don't underestimate how hard it is to safely remove an engine, undo driveshaft spline bolts or lift a gearbox back onto the block.

That said, Polos are nice to work on.

I'd fit an HK and get it running with a Weber 32/34 DMTL kit conversion 1887097400.

(Then move to bike carbs if this is not enough power... it will feel much more than you have now, and brake upgrade will be sensible... though I assume you have left hand drive with a brake servo boosted by vacuum from the inlet manifold. UK right hand drive Mk2 do not because of the battery location and firewall profile or maybe cost, lower power. No GK sold in Great Britain).

The more complete donor engine you can find with all accessories the easier it should be, or you may find yourself needing to source strange things like different alternator wiring connectors or different thermostat housing, or coolant temp sensor, gearbox reverse switch for example.

HK is the same engine that was installed in Golf too isnt it?

they offered me a 2g

yes

2g is 3 bolt cam cover hydro head.

hk is 8 bolt cam cover mechanical head.

Mech can rev higher. But nobody sells new standard replacement mech valve lifters.

Race solid lifters are €€€. Race cams also.

Regrinds are possible.

Though hydro heads have larger inlet valves so it kind of evens out.

You could fit new hydraulic lifters and a cam from 3F engine to 2G head,

or even a fast road cam from

dBilas or CatCams or Schrick.

Not sure which carb 2G used, or was it Single Point Injection with Cat?

According to Etzold, MH and 2G used Pierburg 2e3 carb optionally with a (Euro1 ?) cat.

HK manages 96Nm torque at 3300 rpm.

2G needs 3400 rpm for that.

HK does 55ps at 5400 rpm

2G does 55ps at 5200 rpm

(so smaller power band in 2G, and probably falls off faster above that)

Does it come with inlet manifold?

It seems pretty complete

Shame the distributor hall sender socket is damaged.

I may be mistaken but the block oil breather pod and cam cover breather look like they are full of mayonnaise, which would indicate a head gasket failure that caused oil and water to mix, OR, that the car was only used for short journeys.

Might be fine.

Might be damaged from overheating.

I will search better engine 😁

Does the advert text admit to any fault?

I reckon the brake servo vacuum pipe with the yellow one way valve has signs of mayonnaise so it produced enough to enter the inlet manifold. Must have come from the head gasket splitting .. (would not get past piston rings and open inlet valves against air flow, surely).

There's none at the thermostat, so the water pump did not push mayo around the radiator and back to the block before the engine stopped, or if it did (Water pump impeller is a food blender blade) the mayo being lighter went into the coolant reservoir via the thin radiator return pipe so I assume it failed before the thermostat opened. Pipes to car heater have been removed and look clean so heater inlet valve was closed presumably.

Ask for a big discount because you have to flush out the engine's coolant passages and oil passages.

New headbolts, new headgasket. New inlet manifold gasket. New sump gasket.

And for any used engine fit new water pump and cambelt.

was composing that while you replied.

Yes, walk away.

Cheaper and, it seems, fresh. Isn't it?

There's small oil leak at front left rocker cover gasket, which is easy fix.

(usually that corner of head gasket that gets oil leak onto alternator at 150 to 200 tkm).

There's some antifreeze crust at the thermostat, looks like the clip cut the rubber pipe. It does flex there.

The coolant spilled on the floor looks green not rusty. So that's a good sign someone topped it up with antifreeze not just water.

Only 67 tkm. Correct inlet manifold, its rubber mount might even be okay or too hard. Need your Polo engine mount as Golf one on there.

Thanks. Please what does mean tkm?

And, concerning motor mount, do you mean I will need polo or golf mounts?

tkm = thousand kilo meters

Reuse your existing Polo front mount, that is also alternator holder.

May as well replace the rubber donut while doing that.

Thanks. But I am afraid it s 180 tkm..

I know but on the rocker cover it says 181 K and this is what they replied in a message

oh fair enough.

Still not bad for 35 years old.
