Model: Mk3 Saloon (notchback) 1.3mpi (RR’d – 73 bhp @ 5025rpm / 82 lbft)

Engine: 1.3 NZ mpi digijet. Mods: Poloace chip, GT camshaft, Golf GTI Airflow meter & JR panel filter in modified airbox with cold air feeds, temp switch removed, G40 exhaust manifold & De-cat pipe.

Suspension: Lowered 40mm at the front, 25mm (g40 springs) at the rear, G-laderseite Cup Car nylon ARB bushes and blocks, Ged brace bar, GT/G40 rear beam, 15mm stub axle spacers (custom made) to be fitted when I can be arsed sourcing some bolts.

Brakes: Front - G40 calipers & vented disks, Greenstuff pads, Pitstop braided hoses. Rear - GT drums, stock shoes, CL cylinders & Pitstop braided hoses. 22.5mm Master cylinder, dot 5.1 fluid.

Wheels and Tyres: VW Silverstones painted wheel-trim silver, Pirelli P6000 rears, Cheapoki fronts (soon to be yoko A539s)

Electrical: Steve-O headlight loom upgrade, Passat heated washer jets (to be fitted when i can suss out what to solder em to!), Mk3 Golf wiper relay (programmable intermittent wipe), Mk2 Golf interior light. LED side repeater bulbs.

Exterior Styling: Not much - (poorly)Black painted badge, Cold air feed in front bumper, de-locked passenger handle, black aerial, all black plastic - all the time.

Interior Styling: Scirocco GTII front seats, Coupe S steering wheel, GT clocks, Richbrook gearknob.

ICE and Security: Knackered Alpine head unit that plays what it wants when it wants, Classic old school amp - looks massive, gives out about 3 watts pmpo, and a cheapo bass tube i swapped for an old works phone.

Comments: This car is a trooper to be fair, the only real problems I’ve had have been my own doing! I bought it thoroughly stock in aug.‘05, just wanted something cheap, reliable and unnattractive to thieving pikey bastards. I drove it, experienced the deadly understeer and picked up the wider wheels cheap on the bay, then just started tinkering. Its the first car I've modded and its a buzz - the car looks, goes and feels a hell of a lot better than when i got it and, for the moment at least, its a rattle free and smooth drive.

Future plans are: Factory tints - once they're in ill re-dye the back seat as its faded to ufck, A bigger exhaust - thinkin one off a 1.6 vento for stock looks, and either G40 or 1.4GT conversion next year. That'll do me, I've thrown enough money and weekends at it as it is!

Its been good fun and really rewarding doing most of the work (barring the fuel tank - that was a shit), & pretty cheap too. But the best resource for all of it has been clubpolo, i came on here a proper noob, asked the de-riguer dumbass questions and got proper, intelligent & helpful answers. The site gave me the confidence to tackle jobs that would probably have cost me as much in garage fees as I've spent on all the bits iv fitted!

dunno really, i chipped it at the same time - id say between 5-7 bhp, but its hard to say. Pound for pound, the cam was a more effective mod.

Hiya - Its from an 8 valve Mk2 GTi. Its a bit fiddly cutting the airbox out to make it fit as the AFM is physically a lot bigger than the stock item. But if you're not bothered about it not looking stock under the bonnet its loads easier just to get a cone filter and plonk that on the end. The rubber pipe to the throttlebody can be stretched over the Golf AFM by just warming it up in some hot water and wrestling it on.

The trickiest bit is setting up the spring tension, took me about a week of farting around before i got it right. It needs to be set up on a cold engine because its the AFM that controls the fueling before the ECU & lambda kicks in. If you go for it, drop me a pm and tell you what i can remember doing to get mine right.

Its a good mod, used in conjunction with others.

uv dun a well good job of that! can hardly tell its not standard. so have you made the golf AFM fit into the original gt air box? does a polo panel filter still fit it?

Thanks man, I cant take too much credit though - i was just following Dom (Optima 21)'s guide that used to be on here. It is a pretty stealthy mod, the way i like em!

Its the original GT/NZ airbox yeah - just adapted to fit, all the work is in the lid. Yep, original panel filter (or any aftermarket) fits in as usual.
