Well, doesn't time fly?

Car's been off the road now for over two years now. Around 18 months ago, I stripped the fuel tank off ready to have a look at the inner sill but due to other projects I didn't get much further. I bought another car to have a go at welding on but found I was pretty pants at it (I should go on one of those welding courses I think)

Anyway, so it sat there with no tank on it, not running making me feel sad. Never once did i contemplate breaking it but I am quite disillusioned with the bodywork repair industry so I was in a bit of a pickle about what to do.

But Vic came to my rescue and offered to have a look at it for me. I hired a trailer and, with the passat estate, towed it on the trailer down to Vic's in Northamptonshire. No pics of it being a trailer queen I'm afraid but I will try and get some when I pick it up again :)

He'd recently done a repair on his mk2 saloon in the same area so knew what to expect, on the face of it my car looked ok, but on full inspection there were some quite serious problems

Lots of rust on the seam between inner arch and inner quarter.

Bottom of filler neck area, nothing much left!

Pipe of doom - Surprisingly not that bad.

Right behind the filler flap. I don't remember seeing any paint defects before the exploratory surgery, so this was a real sneaky one!

The outer sill had been repair previously (before I bought the car in 2005). This was what the repair parts consisted of:

This was the amount of work Vic had to do on his mk2 saloon. As you can see, much less despite more than double the mileage. (car same age)

Preparations for the rolling road day are underway...

Thats pretty cool, never knew such a service existed, might have to get mine done!

There were a few reasons for me to do it. And the recommendations about getting them done vary; but I'd say it's worth a look if you don't know if they've been done or if you've got a lot of miles on the engine.

The flow rate was a bit of an unknown - The injectors came off an audi V8 engine. Most sources quoted around 180cc but some quoted 200. I wanted something between GT (155) and G40 (200) in size. There aren't many options!

They also came covered in oil and sludge, which made me think they'd probably be pretty gummed up. I wish I'd take a before pic they look much better now!

Job for this weekend *(assuming the snow goes away) is fit a new fuel filter and put these in. Also want to check the fuel pressure as the pump came off a GT conversion so I cant be sure it's the right one unless I pressure test it.

I will say that the graph is a little misleading; they were pretty close to their maximum flow rate still.

Made some good progress today, though there were some issues installing the injectors

Audi V8 injector

The difference is the audi injjector is missing the collar at the top of the injector that is used by a spring clip to secure the injector onto the fuel rail. Potentially a disaster, but fortunately the audi injectors came with their own slightly different spring clips and I was able to modify them to fit the polo fuel rail

One thing I noticed on the audi injectors is they have 4 nozzles instead of one - this is something that later bosch injectors do for better fuel atomisation, so there could be some fuel economy gains to be had. We shall see!

Changed the fuel filter and tested fuel pressure. All good. Seems to run just fine on the new injectors. Will probably go for a drive tomorrow to see how it goes.

I'm a bit pissed off with the exhaust - I had a look underneath and noticed a restriction behind the flex section. Don't know why it's there but I will need to sort it. Too late to do anything about it now before the RR day. - So I have an excuse for it under-performing already!
