I was thinking tan for the colour, more or less what it is now. Should suit the dash and carpets etc very nicely. :)

more importantly when is the engine having its grand unveiling? last mention was september, any news??

Derby looks great Gaz, shame about the scrubage issues. Corrado seats FTW, they're comfy as fook and sit spot on. 8-)

No change with the engine. Should be finished over the next couple of months, it's having a few things done at an engine builders at the mo. It'll be done at some point in 2009, hopefully before the show season kicks off. :)

Once it's all put together proper it'll look ace. I like the borbets a lot, shame they scrub. If you ever want to sell them drop me a line Gaz, I'd love them on the lupo. :)

I miss my mk2 loon, a lot! Lhasa green is gorgeous as well, :)

I kinda get the impression you've not read this thread? But I shall explain everything that's happened since the first set of pics (again).

The borbet As were a bit of an experiment. I'm not convinced myself. (see post you quoted above which discusses this and the wheels you mention) Everything else that's been done needed doing - the de-trim was a prep for the respray. I've still got all the bits, mainly because I never throw anything away. But really wasn't worth putting any of it back on because it was all so delapidated, the only bit of decent chrome left was on the car was the grille (and grille spolier) I will get around to replacing it all eventually, hopefully with NOS stuff. I did keep the original interior for a while, and wanted to keep it that way. But the drivers seat was broken and dangerous and had to get rid of it. Corrado seats might not look quite right, but they do have the advantage of making it more comfortable for me to sit in the car. When they're re-trimmed they'll look awesome, in keeping with the age of the car as much as possible.

I think most people are aware that it's a WIP and I was just excited to get it back after the respray, so did something quickly to get it on the road before the polo show.

Hi Gaz.

Yeah I read the whole thing before commenting and I noticed you weren't sure about the 'A's and was just trying to encourage you to go back to the deep dish wheels as everyone seemed to be in favour of the 'A's......

I'm glad to hear you intend to put the trim back on when it becomes available as I think that was part of the beauty of the original look (a bit like the Mk 1 Derby that won to 2008 show) and I know how hard it is to find, or keep, original seats in good nick.

My polos always had horrendously bad wear to the driver's seats and foams so I finally retrimmed a set in leather....took me nearly 7 years on and off (did it by hand) so I know about a work in progress :-(

Anyway keep up the good work. Sorry if I sounded critical, wasn't my intention.

At least your car is up and running!! I 'finished' my Mk2 breadvan restoration 3 years ago and have never used the car as I can't find a solution to my suspension problems - big wheels, low suspension, undriveable :-(

I'm willing to sell the wheels for the right price ;) Only one scrubs, and I might be able to sort it but I think they might be more trouble than they're worth.

Well I'm glad we got that straightened out! :)

Despite my best efforts with new suspension and a different driveshaft (the right length this time!) these wheels are still nowhere near close to fitting on the front left. So It looks like I am going to have to sell them. :(

how does the steering feel with 16's on? i thought it would feel horrible...

Shame about the wheels mate. The 14x6 A's should fit all alright?

It looks lovely! What engine is it running?

hows the engine coming on gaz, did you manage to find a hk head?

They are 15s, and it drove ok apart from the horrendous scrubbing on the passenger side front wheel arch!

Yeah I don't like 14x6 borbet As, they look nowt like the 15s/16s and they have no dish. Shame they don't make 14x7s!

Not technically running an engine at the minute as I'm still waiting to have the cylinder head rebuilt. But it's basically an ABD block with a mechanical head that's had some work done on GT injection.

hows the engine coming on gaz, did you manage to find a hk head?

I found one which turned out to be cracked in several places. :x Found another from a GL (engine code, not trim level) 1043 and fortunately it was ok.

I've still got the 1600 but I decided it was going to be too expensive to have done what I wanted to do it and the amount I use the car I couldn't really justify it. So I've gone back to my roots. Good 'ol ABD conversion (with a twist) :D

I'm glad you found a head in the end, you wouldnt beleive that good ones are that hard to find would you? look forward to seeing the engine built from what I've heard from you in the past, with all the 'trick' bits it should be a little flyer. I'm still gonna have a go at putting that head i bought off you on a 1.6 bottom end, managed to source a gk cam, double valve springs and a VWM weber inlet too, just need a bottom end and some time now lol

Looking good! :)

Its strange about the front left, I wonder why thats the only one that scrubs.. Would Arch rolling help?

This is one of my favorites.

I think you're right with the ABD (though i dont think i'll go back to an iron block lol),but i could never get my head around those wheels. 6n/2 great, but the MK2 loon..?

And one with such classic flavour - you built on this with the MK1 Scirocco steering wheel to great effect and your chrome wheel rims set the car off best imo. If they were too small, you could run Comp ML's, bigger versions of your classic steels with the TR6's deep trims,or even go as classic as the gold Chevette on this page; http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?...3831&st=125 ..Though that's a bit girly.

I'm sure this isn't a welcome point because you'd clearly chosen to keep the wheels, but wheel suitability aside its a top motor imo

The borbets are for sale! Just dropped them off at a mates to have the tyres removed today! The pics were one last shoot with them on for old times sake. I do love the borbets, but they are too big. If I had another car to put them on (mk1 jetta perhaps) I would keep them. Yes they have had a surprising amount of criticism throughout this thread, and I can understand where pepole are coming from. But my justification for having them (if any were needed!) is this: They were originally put on E30 BMWs and the like (iconic car of the 80s) and they first came out in 1990, so they aren't a new design. They've just stood the test of time exceptionally well. So they have as much right to be on my mk2 as they do on anything newer.

I've looked at a few mk2/3s and they all seem to scrub more on one side than the other, and more often than not it's the passenger side that's the culprit. They were scrubbing that bad, unless I put wider arches on, they were never gonna happen. They were scrubbing on the tread, not even on the sidewall!

Gaz liking your derby mate

Hoping my 89 Polo classic can look something like yours one day

Out of interest, I have just purchased a Mk1 GTi clock set (Non MFA) and was wondering what to do about the handbrake light as they don't seem to have them?? Choke light is no issue as I have an autochoke Pierburg :(

And also is the fuel gauge out because the clocks were off a golf or is that just a dodgy clock set, and if so is it possible to use the fuel gauge out of my original polo clock set

Cheers

Hi, I used the golf fuel gauge. It read the same as the original fuel gauge on my car which was lucky cos I think it's a different size on the mfa clocks. I think they all work on the same resistance, even though the tank size is different on the golf vs the polo.

You can buy a handbrake light indicator and fit it into the switch blank below the hazard switch, but you'll also need the plug to go into the back of it with some spare wire to wire it up.

So on a non MFA set I should be OK, When I get the clock set (well two clock sets!) I'll let you know how it goes

My car has the hazard switch at the bottom already, and has a blank at the top section so it should just go in there instead?

You don't happen to have one of those plugs or know anyone that does? I doubt there will be a MK1 golf at my local scrappy :p

Cheers for the link aswell, I think I'll be purchasing one of those

Thanks
