The one i had in mine, which is now in the 6n, is very much a 4+E style (or 4+OD or 6-5th lol) and that's a 6k loon 1.6 AEE unit with diesel 37/50 5th.

A 34/53 in this wouldn't really be useable on anything but cruise mode, as 5th has the engine at idle at 30mph, and the valver can't really pull it below 35mph. It's no use below 40. So whilst it'd be nice, you'd also want a very long 4th to make 30-50mph driving economical.

I just need the longest overall ratios for mine, 1st is too short in any 085 i've experienced in any car, so the rest are flawed from there. I need to find 3.3 final drives but i don't have ETKA.

Well now my brother's car is finished I've decided to get stuck into sorting the saloon out. Took the subframe, exhaust, driveshafts and gearbox off last night to cure various issues

Subframe

Too soft springs and no anti roll bar were making me sad, A stage 2 would be good but for now I'm going to go back to Stage 0.

Exhaust

There are various things wrong with the downpipe (length, fitment, lambda location) so I've decided to get a 4-branch. This also means I'll have to get the longlife exhaust modified to suit (at the moment, it's too long due to having a very short downpipe)

Driveshafts (?)

Vibration at 60mph, has done it since I did the engine swap, all sets of wheels I've tried do it so I think it's the driveshafts as they are an unmatched set. (fitted with engine) got a new set to go on.

Gearbox

Old box wasn't doing too bad but it crunches into second on downchanges and aggressive upchanges. Got a known good CEG to go on but I've started to get serious about finding another more suitable gearbox (as discussed earlier in the thread) while everything is off I might as well.

Once all that's sorted it'll be time for to tackle the dreaded welding on the nearside sill, which means stripping the fuel lines, rear axle and fuel tank, buying a welder and learning how to weld.

I'm hoping to be at BVF in it.

Nothing wrong with the CEG it's a known good spare that I've no intention of parting with! :-p I just don't like the ratios of the 4+E style box. They aren't evenly spread. 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th in particular give large drops in revs while 4th and 5th are very close together

yeah i agree, id like to have a bit of a longer second gear and shorter 4th/longer 5th

Love this car so much! If i get to Polo show, massively need a Double Dunder photo shoot!

What subframe do you have on this then Gaz? Whats wrong with the ride?

It's not the subframe's fault. I realise now it's not designed for my light road use, it's designed for the track. It's a PPP stage 3. It just rolls around too much because of no ARB and I'm running a suspension kit that assumes I have one. Set of coilovers would sort it, but it's more money than I want to spend, the weitec kit gives me the stance I want so I've just chosen the cheapest way of sorting it out.

ahhh gutted! Never mind.

Got the windows in btw, major differance. Pleasure doing buisness 8-)

:)

The gearbox I want has a longer first and 2nd, shorter 3rd and 4th and about the same 5th.

Crap, I've got a Weitec kit

Ooops! Should have probably waited til I offloaded it!

fastclassicsdan on here has the same setup I think on his mk2 coupe s. He complains about the roll as much as me, but says it's still very good on the track, you just end up on three wheels a lot. :-p

Haha, I'll still take it. I was eyeing up some coilovers anyway

It'll be going on a Coupe S, just with a bit of boost involved :ninja:

Shh, you didn't see anything here :ninja:

Oh dear, I have a stage 3 with KWs waiting to go on. Maybe I'll look into a retrofitted front arb. Then again, it cant be any worse than standard steering!!

kw...coilovers? Those who have coilovers say it's fine.

No, shocks and springs :-( we'll se how it goes

I've hardly got any use out of the weitec stuff yet. If I was in the market for some suspension I'd probably get some coilovers from Kiz (youngprodigys). They look top draw and cheap too.

Coilovers aren't for me, I like my back in one piece. If i wanted ultra lows and adjustability, I'd look into a custom air set up

  • Author

Yeah I wouldn't run lower with the coilovers than I am now. It's low enough! I have my weitec kit on the highest setting at the back so when the car's loaded up for shows it's not on its' arse.

  • Author

I could use the excuse that I'm old but to be honest I've never been into mega lows. Uniform arch gap (impossible on a squareback :-p) is what I strive for. Think this is the closest I've gotten:

That's with the kit I've got now, think I might have set the suspension higher up on the back than that since.

Cos I run big wheels with standard arches I'm at my limit at 60mm anyway. The borbets didn't fit properly at that. :(

The kit I have is 60, and like you I'm after a uniform gap. I'm running 14s with low pros, so I hope they don't look lost is a pit of vaginal arch gap.

I've always thought your's has a good stance

Thanks! :) It's taken me a while to get it right. Had a few different kits, 3 different sets of front susupension and 4 on the back. :o

Made a bit more progress tonight, took the manifold and downpipe off ready for the 4-branch. Stole the oil out of the knackered box (new oil 3k ago) and put it in the spare CEG just in case I use it. HATE gearbox oil!

Good tip for filling the box oil - you can fill it from the speedo drive, just undo the speedo drive bolt. and pull the drive out. If you fill it right up this way you end up with too much oil in the box, but if you take the normal fill plug out you can keep an eye on the level. This method saves using a tube or turning the box on its side so it's a lot less messy.

That's a handy tip. I need to do mine this weekend. Any idea how much oil it takes? Mines bone dry atm

Depends on the gearbox code, usually 3.1 litres so you'll need to buy 4. Later 6n boxes use 2.7 litres (d boxes onwards)

D boxes? That the code? Bugger, not sure what I have, as I have a 6n box

  • Author

Newer boxes start with higher letters. CWX is an example of an early 6n box, DXH is an example of a late one

I see. I'll have to scout about for the code
