I'm thinking about getting HIDs and was just wondering about what type I would as I will get new headlights at the same time. My bulbs atm are H4 but if I changed the headlights to say angel eyes or even better, clear projectors, would the bulb type be different too? H7 i think it is? If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

my angels are H1s..however it says on them not to use HID kits with them, don't know why tho.

yeah they say so, but from a previous post I remember someone saying that he/she contacted the seller and said it shouldn't be a problem as they do them with hids by request as well...

nah that was just that they put xenon bulbs in, not the whole chindig.

yeah the bulbs will change with the headlight your buy, standard mk4s are h4 my aftermarket fk desogn ones are h7

so the hid kit woulhave to be h7 if i ever get one

Those are the lights I have - It states clearly on each light NOT to use HID bulbs as they are plastic and will melt. You might get away with it for a few minutes of driving, but I wouldn't want to risk a long drive with your lights on for hours.

If you want to risk what the seller is offering I would ask for a written guarantee. But then be careful about what comebacks you have with a seller who is 5000 miles away!

I got some blue-tinted bulbs off ebay (just standard H1s, which is what those lights take) and the tint makes them look very very white, especially on main beam, so I wouldn't waste money and the extra risk just to have HIDs. I also used white LED wedge bulbs for the side lights which makes the whole thing look white, without that yellowy tint ordinary bulbs have.

the guy said that its impossible to melt the lights with a hid kit.

i got my angel eyes from halfords. the box was branded "ultra" but on the actual lights itself it says "sonar". theres a warning sticker on the back that says "hid not allowed".

I'm sure there must be someone who has a hid kit with their one-peice angel eyes??? I'm not jus talkin about polos.

oh and i disconnected the wires for the sidelight and that lil white led. looks much better when u can just see the halos.

If so they are H7 and as you know he runs HIDS with out a problem

guys pay attention because I have put uprated whiter "hid"look bulbs and they are fine for me but I bought a set of chrome punto angel eyes for a friend of mine, same seller and same brand (Sonar) and after just a few days that he installed hid look bulbs on, the clear plastic started to melt!!

Now the punto's are different as they like concentrate all the heat in one spot not like the polo's which spread the heat along the whole headlamp, but just to let you know that as hids can get hotter problems can arise...

So a mixed bag there for you all to browse...it's quite refreshing that sellers do honestly say that their products aren't suitable for HID's...TBH I was expecting them all to say they were just to sell goods .

A lot of the Angeleyes look very similar in design apart from the FK ones so I'm not sure how reliable those that say HID's are suitable are.

Because it is using less, energy, it runs cooler, and is kinder to your car's battery and electrical systems.

i also read that a guy installed a hid kit on his car and it didnt melt off the snow like the old hologen bulbs used to.

i am still eagar to use a hid kit with my projector angel eyes. i understand the bulb length has to be the same as the original halogen bulb so it doesnt come too close to the lens.

has anyone else managed to run a hid kit with projector lights? (With or without "hid not allowed" warning sticker).

yes they do foxie! but use more power, hence the ballast packs!

power has got fuck all to do with the heat of the bulb. they still take a 12v feed from the light and route it into the ballast. I'm 99% sure they will be FINE for HID's*

i have had HIDs on my mk4 polo, in FK powerlook headlights, for two years... i didnt know of any other mk4 polos at that point with HIDs!

get a good kit and you wont have problems...

35w verses 55w ... that is a rating of POWER... how u think a ballast must mean they consume more power is beyond me

get yourself some dodgy xenon look bulbs which probably run at 70+ watts and you may melt some plastics

get HIDs...they're the nuts... simple

No decent brands make packaged-up HID kits, because they're illegal in many countries (US and Germany for definite).

Decent brands like Hella, Philips, Denso etc make the components for OEM xenons (bulbs + ballasts). You can make a retrofit HID kit out of these parts, and it'd probably be a better option than some Chinese crap off ebay. The components are dear - around £150 for each ballast, £80+ for each bulb.

A few people on uk-polos bought from hids4u.co.uk, their kits don't appear to be made from components any known brand, but at least they're an established business so you'd have some comeback if it goes wrong

Re: melting headlight

Hids do run at 35w rather than 55w, they give out less heat than a halogen bulb. The bulbs in HID kits obviously aren't tested by safety authorities like DOT or TUV, so quality standards are bound to be lower and you could be more likely to get some dodgy bulb putting out huge heat *possibly*.

Also with a retrofit HID kit you're doing something the headlight manufacturer never intended or tested for. I.e. the retrofit HID bulb will be in a different position to the original halogen bulb, possibly closer to the plastic etc.

Basically with HID kits being illegal in Germany, and there being some many different manufacturers and designs of kit, there's no way a headlight manufacturer can say "yeah, hids are fine with this headlight

i used to have the black angel eyes from Ebay on my car and i melted the casing and the lights became insecure, the reason is that the bulbs work of 2 gases called xenon and something else which when the electricity passes through causes a reaction between the atoms in the 2 gases and they bounce of eath other giving off great amounts of heat! i mean proper heat that you could cook on!!! so i melted the headlights and and replaced mine with FK black headlights and put the hid kit in and so far its going strong!!
