Another difference between twin 40s and bike carbs is that the 40s are horizontal. The bike carbs angle up at 50-60 degrees,so the trumpets point up the the windscreen - i can see down them with the bonnet open. Said bonnet is raised about an inch at the hinges,so the considerable noise echoes out the bay and through the scuttle box. Its a bit Marmite really,but i can easily drop it for a long journey. The 40s look heavier,but i doubt they are. More classic,they tend to look better in most positions,though i think the bike carbs look better when mounted behind a transverse engine such as the small block VW. 40s can be fitted with stunning long stainless trumpets though,whereas the stubby alloy Kei-hins are painted silver. Might polish them up,if i can be bothered,though running without filters isnt wise.

The twin choke weber narrow lane is talking about is completely different to dellorto 40's. The weber is a down draught, delorto 40's are similar to bike carbs, side draught.

Weber IDFs?

How come people seem to praise the dell'orto side draughts so much? Are they cheaper than DCOEs or easier to get manifolds for?

the downdraft Weber's are called IDF's and the Dellorto's are called DRLA's

the dellorto and webber twin 40's are equal to one another, its just that people have preferances and the webers are more common. the thing to remember is that everything that bolts onto the carbs will fit either carb, but the insides of the carbs arnt interchangeble.

I think solex made twin 40's too, but they arnt normally used.

As used on Alfa Romeo's. I'm not entirely sure of price difference. I paid £190 posted with a service kit for a clean pair of dellorto 40 side draughts.

I mean down draught would be cool... if you had no bonnet.

Side draughts are supa tight even with small trumpets, so thought of down draught is wrong, it would be less direct. Which is presumably why they use side draught carbs..

The Dellorto was designed years after the Weber so is classed as a better carb. I think Milan university was involved in the development. Where this falls down is that more people had knowledge of the Weber and chose to carry on supporting them.

Yeah,clearance with the bike carbs is okay,even with the MK2 brake m/c in its place,but 40s on a manifold long enough to clear the plugs are going to command some space. Be nice to see a picture..
