mk4 door locks not working

My central locking has stopped working on the driver's door. I've taken the door handle off and theres a big paddle thing on the back. When I turn the key clockwise (to unlock) the paddle seems to behave properly but going the other way the key just turns without moving the paddle.

I'm sure the central locking is fine, it's just the handle that is playing up. SO.... does anyone know whats wrong with it and can it be fixed? If I have to get a new one how do I match it up to my key?
