Hello there, my polo got hit a while ago and the track rod was bent. I've tried removing it but I'm having abit of trouble.

anyone know how to remove it?

its a mk 4 polo 1.4cl if that helps.

should unbolt mate...unless its bent on the thread itself...then cut it off.

If the bolts are seazed...heat it up with a blow torch and that will break the rust bond

i guess you mean the tapered rose jointed end that attaches into the strut/hub.

a ball joint separator, big hammer or bar should prize that out. heating it probably wont help any.

yeh i undid a bolt on at the end, think it was onto the hub. the bolt is loose but it wont come out???

Now do as Currie said....get a breaker bar in there

I usually end up cutting off the bolt head, doesn't matter if your replacing it.

Yeah,if the bolt is only halfway off and the whole thing is turning,you have two choices - try to lock the stem by,reverse mounting a splitter,whilst you re-die the thread enough to get the nut over it,or just chop its throat. Given that its written off anyway,might aswell just chop its throat.

how do you then actually remove the track rod end out of the steering arm?

i took it off at the other end of the track rod arm, one bolt, undoes easily. then you can get it in a solid vice, heat up the steering arm to beat the fucker out, the tapers can get very well seized in there.

this is the part I'm having trouble removing, does anyone know what size spanner i need and whats the best way to get at it?

does anyone know the size spanner it takes to undo the part cirled in the above pic? also which way to turn to undo? is it anti clockwise like normal? thanks, chris

yay! its off, just need to fit a new one and it wil be back on the road!!! cant wait! :-D

Just incase anyone is interested or has the same problem, its a 32mm spanner and turn anticlockwise. (it was tight though)

I had to cut the other end off cause the nut got stuck, I'm hoping this is the right thing to do. I'm guessing when i get my new one tomorrow it will come with a new nut and bolt. does anyone know?

iirc they do complete with a new nut and thread on the complete arm
