I went down the route of making a red filter. It wasn't too bright at first from the two screw in bulbs, so i coated the inside of that top plastic piece with foil (avoiding some spots to prevent any shorting) and it has improved the brightness.

Its still a little dim so I've ordered some red leds to compare with the red filter method.
