I might not be able to make it now. Got stopped by police and told I'm not aloud to run my wheels as they are 'illegal'

Yea your right, If the tread is in the arches it will pass the mot, thus road legal. Don't take them off. Stand your ground.

get proof they're legal i.e find the legislation in the roadt traffic act that states tread pattern musn't stick out past the bodywork, print out a copy, keep it in your car, problem solved! you get a section 59 for it?

yeah prob will have to do that. Even though the tread sticks out the back arches a bit so need of ache work.
