what states the engine in?? g40 engine

See here: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~mctavish/polo/P02.jpg

Although I've stripped everything off the block. Head is sitting on a shelf in the garage and there are a few big plastic boxes full of parts.

Got most of the components for the head re-build: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~mctavish/polo/P07.jpg

It keeps getting pushed back further and further down the to do list. Summer hopefully...bottom end rebuild, CNC P&P rebuilt head...Quaife diff (with any luck) and a refurb. gear box...

Yeah, I would definately get the engine stripped and rebuilt. Looks like it was sat a fair while. Prob a bit dry in there, lol.

.Quaife diff (with any luck)

pipe dream tbh.

Great work. Love the subframe and wheels. going to look a real sweetie this. 8-)

Well there are 9 people interested just now, only need 1 more...pipe dream indeed but it's still in the pipe yet.

Dry is the word! It's sat for a year in my possession...god knows how long for before that. I've got a spare block with some damage on it, an extra crank and some spare pistons + rods...all of which may prove useful for an increase in capacity.

i still dont think it will fit in a polo diff, and neither do a few people.

also, if you had driven with a plate diff you would realise they arent as harsh as people think they are unless you are some kind of pussy.

Tav....if thats the engine i think it is,it has been sat over at

Bedrock VW for a good 3 years before you bought it mate.

IIRC it was a healthy unit before it was pulled out of the car.

Well Quaife have had an ATV gearbox in their possession for about a year. It was sent there for them to take measurements and check fitment. I can only assume that after measuring it up they are satisfied that they can fit the Quaife unit into the gearbox...otherwise they would they have progressed the buy to the point of purchase? They aren't going to sell us differential casing with air in them. I'm tempted to enquire to be sure now, but at no point did they ever express any concerns about fitment.

Plate diff. = locking on deceleration = lift-off under steer = not suitable for road driving as far as I am concerned.

The throttle is there not only to increase speed, but to balance the car using acceleration/deceleration. I enjoy using the throttle to modulate the car through a bend. When I was at Croft last year I also took a fondness to using the trail braking to bring the rear of the car into the steering equation. I couldn't believe just how awesome a small degree of slip was for entering corners, especially when braking hard from triple figure speeds. I think with a plate-type differential this experience would be lost. It's especially important to be able to lift off and tighten the line when driving on the road as sometimes it is easy to misjudge a corner.

So taking all of the above into consideration the helical-type differential provides ample improvements to control under acceleration, but with no of the associated draw back when decelerating. Perfect for what I'd want. If I weren't able to buy a Quaife then the Grippa would be next on the list, but only once I'd exhausted all opportunities.

Looks about 3 years worth of bird shit when we cleaned the charger off. I was assured it was healthy before removal, but I wouldn't trust Dean as far as I could throw him to be fair.

thats the reason they use ATB diffs in cup cars.

I don't follow (it's late)? The reason they use ATB diffs is for the whole adjustability thing I was yabbering on about or...?

polo cup cars, hillclimbers, general motorsport - all use atbs . i forgot you arent fluent in sarcasm..

I'm sorry but sarcasm isn't the easiest thing to read over the internet.

Who mentioned motor sport? It's a road car...if I were actually competing then my choice of differential would be completely different. But considering that the majority of people don't use their car solely for competitive motor sport, then there should be interest in something more subtle than a plate-type differential.

Plus Quaife have plenty of ATB's being used in competition cars...so they can stand up to that environment fine.

why on earth i just read this whole thread at this time of the morning i have no idea, on the other hand it managed to hold my attention when i should really be in bed so well done for that!

if its just a road car why you going to great lenghts with subframe etc.

I'm sure they do have plenty. but that doesnt mean a polo one will be any good.

either way I'm not going to argue cause at the end of the day i have the better diff, in my box now, for less money. and you could've too.

Because I believe to stand half a chance of being a good road car it needs the subframe, that's why I am bothering.

Better differential for your car perhaps...but then if you have a 1.5 Turbo you are probably after something completely different from me in almost every way.

Blog 11: Refurbished Calipers

I sent my Girling 54 brake calipers away to be refurbished 2 weeks ago. Today I received them back and I am so pleased with how they have turned out. I don't have a picture of the calipers before I sent them away, but everyone familiar with the rusty seized mess that 15 year old calipers are often in.

Bigg Red carried out the refurbishment. You can find them at http://www.bigredd.co.uk

The calipers were cleaned, blasted and pressure tested before being finished in gold electroplate (zinc). The pistons, seals and bleed nipples were then replaced with brand new items. The calipers are effectively brand new, hence why the use the term "remanufacture" in their literature.

Here is the box they arrived in...

Calipers were well packaged, really feels like getting brand new parts:

Here is the finished product. So happy with how they have turned out:

I was impressed with the dust caps. They really push the idea that what you have received back isn't an old part, but something new:

I am sure some people will pick up on the fact they haven't been fitted. Hopefully my struts will be back from powder coating in a week or two and I can get these fitted.

Mmmmmmmm there nice and clean!!

They do look good....do you mind me asking how much they chraged you to refurb them?

Not at all...though it wasn't cheap. £96 for both calipers + £8 for delivery via DHL. Seems like quite a lot but they effectively brand new and far better than I could have managed with a pot of hammerite. You send them the calipers with your details enclosed. They refurb. them then give you a call to arrange payment and delivery. Couple of days later you have them.

If you are looking to give calipers a new lease of life and want them looking their best I'd recommend them. I believe they come with a 1 year warranty against leaks too, would have to double check that.

Cant belive how well the calipers have come out. they're superb.

aye thats quite a good price, id seriously recommend it for the state of most lucas 54 calipers you pick up from the scrappies, my next aim is to get hold of some girling 60s for some twin pot action :)

The calipers even SMELL new

This will without doubt be the best GT on the road shortly and come the end of the year should be up there amongst the best G40's aswell for pure driveability and the quality of parts/effort/time thats gone into it! = FACT

You know tav once youve finished you might aswell get a taxi license for it with the amount of rides youll be giving to shut the EVW haters up

Oh that and me probably wanting to go in it whenever possible! My new wheels will hardly get any miles on them

So pleased. I didn't really know what to expect when I opened the box. Took them to local meet tonight for some show and tell and everyone seemed to think they looked good which was nice!

Twin pots...ooooo dirty!

very nice min, looking forward to your week off soon, let me know asap and i'll try and keep it as free as possible.. looks like we've got a lot of work to do haha.

I don't think £100 is anything but reasonable for what you get.. looks like new and guaranteed for a bit as well. Got the new pads disks and braided lines together as well.. just need sort out the rear brake situation.
