Is that £112 for the calipers I have? I might get new ones for the rear as I don't have calipers to get refurb'd.

are they definatly Lucas 54 calipers or the VWII jobbies? I'm I'm not mistaken the lucas ones are at least 60 each with exchange!

as for rear calipers you can go for mk2/3 items which can be had for around 40 quid + for a brand new pair or around 80 quid for a set of Mk4s, id personally got for the mk4s which are anti-seize due to having the handbrake mechs inside as opposed to the mk2/3s which had is on the outside, i think they are alumnimun as opposed to cast metal and are lighter.

Rebuild kits for these are only a round a tenner for both sides for the lucas 54s but obviously the wont get shot-blasted or painted but you can do a reasonable home job to save money.

you can use the calipers but not the carriers, the carriers have a 95mm spacing and mk1 golfs + mk1/2/3 polos have 76mm spacing, you could either drill the carriers and make up some adaptor plates from a black (eitehr from rallye design) or some spare metal and use hi-tensile head bolts to keep em in.

scrappy searching will find you 100's, failing that andy have you heard of the vauxhall caliper conversion

cheaper and in far more plentiful supply minus scene tax prices

Yup that's ones. Corrado 16v + G60 too I believe.

So using Bigg Red or GSF seems to be quite similar in this case.

Just looked at the price of Golf Mk4 rear calipers...non-exchange £82 each!!! Exchange was £55ish. Might stick with the Mk2 items.

Edit: Scratch that...they are as expensive...Mk4 it is.

@Saf - already got a Vauxhall setup. Was only asking Tav which calipers he'd got to check I'd looked the right ones up on GSF.

Blog 14: Last of the Suspension + Brakes Components

So a week or so ago I finally got the subframe I've waited so long for. It's had a trip to the powder coaters in town and now looks mint. I finally had my tyres fitted after the wheels received some powder coat too. My brake callipers are back looking sweet too after being remanufactured...all the parts are mounting up...but I still needed a few more...will it ever end!?!?

Here we have:

• H&R 60/40 Cup Kit
• G40 Steering Arms
• G40 Track Control Arms
• VW Front Hubs
• VW Front Wheel Bearings
• VW Mk2 Golf GTi 256mm Plain Disks
• VW Mk2 Golf GTi/Corrado G60 Pads
• Compbrake Inline Bias Contoller

Close up of the TCA's & steering arms. These are rose jointed and should hopefully help the front end set up massively:

Here are the pads + disks. Starting with VW items and then I'll move onto a more aggressive pad + vented disks if required. I've also picked up a Compbrake inline bias valve that'll hopefully keep the rear in check when I fit the disk conversion:

Just thought I'd whore out the badges + stickers I have collected. Brand new front and rear G40 badges....mmmm baby! The radiator cover stickers are from DKnight and they look spot on:

I saw this MASSIVE Domo Kun in a shop window when I was on a uni research trip...had to take a photo! It's awesome!

So all I need to do now is get the struts and rear beam coated (this Tuesday when I get paid, it's been an expensive month...selling my XBOX 360 to help push the car along) and fit all of the parts.

Great update as usual dude, one the very few threads on here now which is actually worth reading.

Couple of questions if i may:

Did the H&R kit front inserts come with the rubber boots? The bump stops on the rear look a little on the large side? i.e. could be almost siting on them when fitted? I know i chopped down my standard ones way back when i fitted the spax kit to my olop.

And.......if ever come to sell this creation can i be first in line? Its the kind of attention to detail that i tried to put into my mk3 before i sold it but i'd struggle to find another which had been looked after aswell.

Cheers Stuey. Attention to detail is such fun...there are some great examples of people really taking their time on CP and making cars which really work...be that visually or performance orientated. Big props. for getting those 15's on a Mk3 Polo and it actually looking great.

Bump stops for the rear will prob. def need cut down now that you mention it..I'll see what sort of gap is as standard and try cutting the new ones down to replicate that with the shorter springs. Looks like they'd be easy enough to slice through?

Black bits on the front damper inserts are bump stops too, again VW bits for G40 suspension, so might need modified. I just slapped everything together to save bits getting lost when moving about.

Sell it? I'm sure by the time it's done that'd be such a hard thing to do. I can see it evolving from road car to track car when I have a little more cash for something "better" day-to-day. A bit like this...but perhaps with side windows...and less mud :

Fantastic work Tav, this really will be one of the most well sorted and detailed usable cars on here.

TBH, I can't understand why you are getting a bit of flack from certain corners of this forum. Is it simply because you are doing such a proper job rather than just chucking it all together willy nilly? Are people getting jealous of the stockpile of quality parts you have? Is it because the base vehicle is such a nice example to start with? Dunno, but just keep your head down and keep to your game plan mate.

The car is gonna be fantastic when its finished, the sensible approach and forethought are really gonna seperate this from the normal shiny painted, slammed on fat wheels brigade on here.

I don't like shouting about what I've spent...a) cause that not cool b) cause it reminds me of how much it has all cost...but those parts on the table are worth what I paid for the car. Then add on the cost of the brake callipers, subframe, G40 conversion and it all gets quite serious.
