mine does exact same thing and my fuel consumption just got 42.7 miles for 10 pounds worth of fuel..............

So what's the consensus to over cooling? Is it a batch of faulty stats or sealing rings missing? Are the radiator top hoses getting hot i.e. is the gauge working properly? The reason I ask is because I'm going to look at a Polo tomorrow with a view to buying it where the owner is experiencing the same problem. It has been very cold here lately so maybe there's a winter stat?

...incidentally what is the rating on the thermostat folk are putting in? Are they 98'C fully open?

How can you have an overheating problem, it's freezing out there! Is your radiator getting hot? If not then your thermostat is stuck shut and needs to be replaced. If your fan doesn't come on then wire 12v across it and see if the fan spins then check the motor wires for 12v, if all ok then it's the radiator sensor (most likely) that need replacing. Overheating will warp your cylinder head!

It does have a problem, you shouldn't be off the gauge when driving along. I think you need a hotter thermostat, i.e. if you've got a 98C try a 102C - at one time people would have summer and winter thermostats. Driving a cold engine will use lots of petrol

mine is fixed now , stays at 70 when moving fast (motorway) then goes to normal on 30mph roads.

Mine stays around 85-90, whether driving in the city or on the motorway. Surely dropping back to near 70 isn't good?

Edit: And I replaced my thermostat and housing end of July/beginning of August.

I've had the same problem , changed the thermostat twice the temp sender and the thermostat housing and it still wont get to half way when I'm driving . This is really anoying me now . Could i have done something wrong?

Cas,

Suggest you remove the thermostat and take car for a test drive.

If the car still overheats and you are not loosing coolant, check if the fan cuts in at high temperature.

If fan is OK, probably should look at radiator or hoses choked with sludge - good flush out with hose, then finally the coolant circulating pump.

had same problem as everyone, when you go faster it gets colder due to air colling ect,

bought a brand new thermostat housing, including all the sensors and a new thermo, works like a treat, so make sure nothing else has cracked around it
