I have a gti, my mate owns a 172! Yeah it ass rapes my polo but maintainng it is more expensive!

Talking £750 for cambelt change! Tax is only £15 more aswell

But as for petrol he averages around 37-39mpg motorway were as i only get around 35mpg! :(

clio's are alot quicker, but mine just about kept up with one around the twisties (thank you mr eibach!) that 2.0 is heavy over the front end.

The 172 is impressive, but will cripple you with running costs.

Oh and the clio's have plastic front wings (aint that right heather........) which makes them look odd when you look at the paint.

You kept up with a Clio 172 in your 1.2 3 pot Polo?

Yeah... haha... was that in your dream Paul?

Yeah and they do have plastic wings... was that a poke? - Paint looks fine on mine thankyou very much. Must mean the paint looks funny on your bumpers then?

Plastic = light + cheap to replace. Good in my eyes.

clio would blow it to the weeds matey...around corners and in straight line, and even if the polo is chipped.

oh and clios do have plastic wings...well my mk1 16v did lol

What's been said about the paint colours on the wings is true, especially on the silver ones, and yes, it does affect the Polo too, most silver GTI's have slightly different colour plastics too.

As you can see on the following pic of a random 172 I plucked off the net..... the wing looks darker than the door/bonnet.

Ask heth when he comes to the north east meet, he was suprised how close I managed to stay to his back bumper.

the clio may be a ''better'' car eg faster better handerling bla bla

but its not a VW its the scene you buy into.

and I'm not gonna start a argument here but, I'm sure with a couple of mods u could get a mk5 gti running alot quicker.

id go for the mk5

Its a bit of a sweeping statement to make if you don't want to start an arguement

i drive alot of cars through work- the 172/182 are quick but i dont like the driving position, the seat is mounted really high you feel almost as if your sitting on the car not in it, the 182 trophy is by far and away the pick of the bunch, brilliant handling, good looks and quick. However they are not with out there problems, one customers 172 had a gearbox, an exhaust backbox, a lower ball joint and a throttle body all within 10k miles.(at a cost of nearly 4k!) Yes it was driven rather quickly but is that not what they were built for? The 197 on the other hand is a fantastic car, only as quick as 172/182 but the chasis setup is much better as is the driving position. i had a lend of a costomer/friends 197 R27 for 3 days i was blown away such a great car.

still cannot beat the clio v6 for smiles per mile though the noise and tail out fun in that was great!

if you want build quility buy the polo if you want lots of fun and speed buy the clio (but dont be suprised if you see big repair bills)

The scene.... ...it has some benefits but that's not the sole reason to buy a car.

There are plenty of other groups that are as good. Look at my local VW forum for example, on any one night we can have an Impreza Type R, Evo IV, Civic Ek9 Type R, Civic VTi-S, BMW M3's, TVR's, Porsche 911's, Ford Focus, Audi's...etc. etc. etc.

Everyone goes to the meets because they like cars and good conversation. They've all had VW's before...but not any more.

The amount of money you'd have to spend on a Mk5 GTi to get it almost as good as the Clio...you could buy a Mk1 172 as well!

a girl at my uni has a clio sport n she whoooooped my ass! lol shame

still love the dub tho, the gearbox however, different story

Standard Polo GTI vs Standard Clio 182. Clio wins on handling & speed. Polo GTI's usually go for the same amount as the Clio for the equavalent age, i.e an older 172. I'm happy having a Polo GTI and improving it :) Every man and his dog has a Clio 182

I have a Clio as my daily atm, getting a G40 Project up and running has been difficult and still is at a holt...Its only a 04 1.2 16V dynamique but compared to a Polo, especially my old 1.0 6n2, its pretty damn nippy. I was think about a 172/182 before I bought mine, foobaring juicy little buggers, never above 40MPG unless your rolling down a big hill. Mine seems to average around 44-50MPG and an 04 plate with only 15k on the clock I couldnt resist!

Btw, nothings fallen apart....Yet! Id still fold for a Gti if they had the mechanical reliability, and because of the scene.

PIC REMOVED

I dont see how thats funny Paul.. and you know why mate!

It's the same colour as the door... Obviously look where the sun is, the left of the picture. The right hand side is not in direct sunlight.. Thus looking darker..

who gives a dog shit if the colour on the wing is slightly different!! i couldnt give a shite as a roared past a polo gti.

i'm sorry Paul i just can't logically see how your 1.2 clio with 60bhp? could keep up with the 182 clio? you only have lowering springs on and the clio is one of the best handling cars you can buy out the box. its surely not possible unless you are some super hero driver with spiderman responses???? i reckon he wasnt pushing it and is pulling your leg....must be!

Iffy wing colour vs pedal box and gearbox failure? :doubt:

Was through a very twisty section. I had 16" rims on wrapped in pilot premacy's, he had 17" rims on wrapped in ditch finders.

Clio handling isn't that brilliant imo.

EDIT: I also drive a POLO, not a CLIO.

P.S. You drive a POLO too, just incase you got a little confused :)

mmmm interesting....

Yeah, driving Polos makes you realise how shite they are
