Just for reference, that was done with a 4.5" angle grinder and a file. Took about 10 mins :D

yep, this is an easy job if you know what you are doing, I'm getting some spare struts in the future to do this conversion on, I'm also doing it on my mk2 escort mexico when I get around to finishing it, here is how the escort ones are done (note the steering arms on polo struts need to be lowered unlike escort ones that are at the bottom of the strut anyway):

oh and for those of you who can't weld then don't even attempt it, you need to know that the weld has penetrated both pieces of metal and that you have the right amount of heat in the metal so that it'll weld but not warp the casings of the strut.

good work fella  just watch how low you go cause i have driveshafts that sit less than 10mm from chassis legs! need to notch them as soon as i can find some time to do it. keep up the good work

Today = good day!

Set up a bit of a jig with the workmate and some threaded bar:

Making sure it was all parallel was a bitch!

Then moved the arm up and supported it with random bits of wood, and a nut on the threaded bar for accuracy:

Then weld!

Then I cut the threaded tube down and welded that on (bottom only so I didnt distort the thread from the shock absorber cap):

Trial fit:

Need to bore the centre of the spring cap to 20mm to allow it to go over the shock.

Unfortunately I ran out of cutting discs for the dremel so only got one done.. the other one next weekend then they go on the car :D

looking good.

lookin good mate!

Excellent work Adam, interesting thread.

Yea its the 1st thread I subscribed to lol. Doubt I'll attempt this tho cos I'm lazy like that...

holy shit!

DO NOT COPY THIS IDEA IF YOU HAVE A SHIT WELDER OR ARE A SHIT WELDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you dont get this right then accidents will happen, great thread and a great idea but has draw backs if pikeys attempt this.

Speaks the truth!

The welds on this are absolutely crucial, getting the right settings especially.

Blow a hole through the strut and the insert won't go back in, rendering it useless. Too little penetration and you risk it coming back off again. There was lots of practicing and double checking in the process that I didn't write about, probably should have done.

This picture shows the quality of the welding needed for the steering arms:

Bored out the top spring seat things this morning :) All ready to finish off next weekend! :D

Why didn't you just chop 25mm out the lower section underneath the steering arms, and use a MK1 Golf insert? 10x easier

pure quality! I'm sure if you had the time you coudl make a few quid makin these for people

I'd love to, but I just dont have the time.

I have the Polo, a 205 to finish, a Locost to finish, and i'm at school 6 days a week! Got my ASs coming up now aswell.

inspiring thread, well done. good to see someone doing it themselves, anyone can walk into a shop witha wedge of cash. unfortunately, i cant weld, therefore am one of those people haha
