If I was him I'm be going mental at the bank (which is the same bank I'm with incidentaly!). It shouldn't be possible to setup a direct debit with only those details and it's a serious security lapse on the banks part that this happened. Inadvertantly Clarkson has pointed out an even greater issue than lost CDs of bank details, and that is that bank staff aren't sticking to the security measures properly and allowing this sort of crime to happen when it should be impossible.

But with address details it make is alot easier, and for instance if one of the security measures is a memorable date most people stupidly pick there DOB, or memorable name, its usually a mother maiden name/first name etc.

Nothing is ever impossible, and it could have been someone that actually worked for Barclays haha. They can pull up all your information. I used to have access to all the information of anyone that was using at Barclays Cash point. Thats probably a long shot though.

Either way, it is hilarious and alot more damage could have been done, good on the thief for having a comical side!

You can setup a d/d with just name and bank details. However you are protected under the direct debit guarantee and entitled to an immediate refund from your bank if there is an error/issue with a d/d.
