Running speakers in

Featured Replies

hi,

Just wondered what sort of timescale am i looking at to run some component speakers properly, have been run at 1/3 volume for 2weeks and the last week at half. Oh and the amps gain setting has been at 1/3 of 200rms and speakers are 110rms.

Thanks, Appreciate the help

Bro theres no such thing as "running in".... if the speakers cant take the power now they never will! lol.... wack up the volume now.... oh and get your amplifier scoped to avoid clipping.... the 1/3 gain doesnt mean anything in terms of avoiding distroyin your speakers! 8-)

Hit talkaudio....

On a sidenote: how did u get your wiring from your amp to comps.... the standard rubber thing that holds the wires hasnt got anymore space for wires.... n i dont want to drill :|

yes runing in is a good idea. dont listen to that mon ^^^^^^^^^^ he cant even fit speakers .

you should be good now just go for a full re set set your head to about 3/4. then re set your amp.

hope this helps

read the top of this forum - don't give out duff advice - you just did, a speakers coil will not change chemical composition or suddenly change impedence when it gets to a certain age!

a speaker will actually handle more power when its brand new than after a week of playing

yes the suspension will soften up as its played more, but do you have to do anything special during this time - NO! infact the harder you play it the sooner it will settle down to its natural state

what evidence do you have for speakers running in needing to be treated differently other than what you have read on the net??

oh yeah and i have been a professional installer for over 13 years so i can fit speakers :D

and to the OP - your gain being on a 3rd means diddly squat, its possible for the amp to do 200 rms with the gain all the way down!!! (if fed enough signal) a good setup with a scope is the only 100% way to know what power the amp is doing!

no need to run em in but there is also no available control of how high to turn em up, so be warned there are no rms power ratings in front of you so if you go to high with the volume expect to have smoking or blown speakers, i know I've killed quite a lot in my time and I'm only 21

just listen for distortion in the sound the higher you go and you'll be fine

and b4 anyone else says you are on drugs or owt similar build a couple of these first :-D

Not too enthusiastic about blowing my speakers since they cost £110

so just turn it up slowly and listen for distortion and i should be fine?

get your gains set properly on the amps, "its 200wrms and the comps are 110, so i set it to 1/3"

is not the way to go about it, itneeds to be done with a scope by a shop!

just dont whack them all he way up for a couple of weeks!

good advise mate scope is the way forward with a proper car audio shop. i work with same stereos all the time so once 1 has bin scoped you know were you are. the new alpine IMPRINT stereo is really good.

i also have worked as a high end car audio installer for 12 years inc custom installs etc. runing speakers in does inprove sound trust me we did it wene i did installer challange and won on SQ.

cheers :-D

just cos my cars got electrics running through the doors which means theres wires obstructing unlike you are old heap doesnt mean i dont knw how to install u nobend. in fact i was jus mkin life easier for myself by askin 4 advice 1st. what did runnin in do for u interms of protecting the speakers? I'm guessin the excurssion is nw limitless lol. if anything the speakers might losen up a little therefore giving a slight improvement in midbass, but that wasnt in question was it? think before u speak my friend, u now look like a dick.

i am sorry for that mate.

yea runing in doesnt inprove protection or excurssion just sq whitch is the important part.

for your car whitch i work on alot you can drill out the plug to get more space for better wire, use the std speaker wire (not ideal but works fine) or remove the door and drill fresh holes with new gromets ( i know you didnt want that but with a new gromet it will look stock) your x over should fit in the door.

and my polo isnt a heap it now has cl, speaker wire and electric window wire going into door. plus its my run around i have a mk4 golf.

lets not fall out mate

cheers for the advice guys so to set it up properly i should go to an audio place ideally then. Any ideas how much they would charge just to set the gain properly.

Abdul mate what i done was disconnect the multiplug connector and in the corner there is a massive gap i drilled through there on both sides and got all my wiring through really neatly through the rubber thing and none of them can be seen, just looks completely standard :)

Edit: it is a complete bitch of a job though, learnt many new swear words while doing it

Bread Van: Ok, sorry.... really, I am... some people on this forum can be VERY bitchy towards others to say the least so I'm pretty quick with the harsh replies here..... Sorry...

Crossovers are about the same size as the speaker in diameter n pretty thick too! lol, I've enclosed a pic.

Haris: HOW DO U TAKE THE CONNECTOR OFF? My comps are sitting here getting bored.... Oh and a pic of the connector would be great lol.. like where did u drill...? Id rather put random holes in the door then mess up the electrics!

what do u mean by drilling out the plug? I cant get the damn thing off.... (I've got more theoretical knowledge than practical and am still learning) lol 8-)

Yeah trust me mate you should be able to get them in the door cards there's plenty of empty space in there, i broke my multi plug a bit trying to open it but it does require a bit of force to twist it.

Thanks bro, trust me the crossovers dont fit.... lol... I've tried a couple places n just scratched em.... so in the boot they shall go! I still dont get which part u drilled.... maybe if u did a little edit in paint n circled the area? LOL..... please lol

would sound deadning make much of a difference then?

it can do yea, vws are quite solid any who, but puting some in will stop the panel resanating (iam a bad speller i know sorry) skins do some good stuff they do a kit whitch you have sound deadning another piece whitch stops standing waves then a piece whitch stops damp geting to your new speakers more you put in the deader the door the better the sound. its like home audio you dont see them building speaker boxes out of 2mm ply do you?

dynamat

this site explains it i cant find the skins one at the min.
