Well I've got a GT motor in my Mk2 Golf, so yes, they fit with the correct mounts as mine was a 1.3 to start with.

What Luke said about the 4 branch needing modded is a bit of a bastard though I hadn't even thought of that.

Obviously if you were to go turbo things would be easier!

As long as you get a 1.3 rather than a GTI model for a base then it will be more straight forward. This way you will get all the 1.3 engine mounts and drive shafts required. Biggest ball ache iirc is the need to get hold of a custom down pipe knocked up.

from what i remember you want a gti for the

1. arbs

2. fuel tank and pumps

3. wiring

4. clocks/trim etc

you want a 1.3 for

1. engine mounts

2. driveshafts

arb's can be got from a gti, piss easy, fuel tank dont need changin, just pump or get an in-line aftermarket one. Wiring hell no, your best off using ALL the polo engine electronics to make your life easier OR getting a custom loom, clocks can be messed about with till you get em workin or, again use polo ones on custom brackets.

get a mk2 1.3, find someone breaking a GTI (not hard) you'll be fine with 239mm brakes as your car will be light, get a bigger servo and master cylinder if needs be, and PAS is for girls, mk2's feel much nicer without.

if i had a spare G40 knocking about and some spare cash, this would be something i'd do, but i have neither

i've spotted a potential 1.3 mk2...going to have a look at it at the weekend methinks!
